"You're what?" Ben said, no emotion.
"Pregnant, oh my god."
This time shock took over his voice. "We're gonna be parents?!"
"Yeah, we are," I chuckled through tear filled eyes. "You're gonna be a dad."
"I um, I can't," Ben stuttered out. "I fucking love you, and I'm gonna cut this meeting short. I'll see you at home."
"Okay, I have to go--" He hung up without letting me tell him I still had a bunch of stuff to do.
After sitting in the car in the doctor's office parking lot and talking on the phone with Indy for an hour, I went to the store and picked up bread, chips, and canned foods. Then I took the long way home. I just needed time to comprehend everything.
When I finally got home, all of the lights in the house were off. I walked into the kitchen and flipped on the light. Ben was nowhere to be found as I leaned around the corner and looked into the living room. The house was so quiet. After putting the food away, hung my bag on the coat hanger. Tapped to the wall was a note:
Meet me on the pool deck, love. ~Ben
I gave a small smile and walked out of the back door. There were white Christmas lights hanging from the ceiling of the pool cage, and there was quiet Miss May I playing the in the background. Ben was sitting at a little table set up very formally, with a big silver platter and a cap over it, along with two glasses and a bottle of wine. Ben got up, and pulled out the other chair, and I sat down.
"Good evening, darling," Ben said, sitting back down. This was by far the sweetest thing that anyone had ever done for me. "Hungry?"
I giggled, "I am."
He pulled the top off of the platter and revealed a large cheese pizza. I grabbed a slice, "I should have known."
"What?" Ben laughed, grabbing a piece for himself. "I put it in the oven myself."
During our lovely dinner, I slipped in the question, "So what do you think?"
"Right now I'm thinking that you look so beautiful under these lights," He smiled, sipping his wine.
I smiled down at my half eaten slice of pizza. "That's not what I meant."
"I know," He chuckled, letting his knee bump mine, "I think that your gonna be the best mom in the whole wide world-- and I'll be the dad that is trying to be as great."
I looked in his eyes, "You'll be a perfect dad."
"I'll try my best?" He smiled, taking my hand.
When we went back inside and watched movie by the fireplace, Ben wrapped his arms around me from behind and rested his head on my shoulder. "So can sex like, hurt the baby?"
"I think you should do some research before we actually have this kid," I giggled.
"Is that a no?"
Pulling him into a kiss, I smiled, "That's a no."
