As we walked into the kindergarten classroom, Ben was more nervous than Adelaide was. He had gone to talk to the teacher, wanting to tell her about Adelaide's allergies. I crouched down to her height and straightened her shirt, tightened her pigtail-braids, and fixed her shoelaces.
"Mom," five-year-old Adelaide laughed. "I'm okay, you can go now."
I put my hand on her chin and smiled, "Hey, I can't leave until your father tears himself away from you." I looked back, to find him looking over the schedule on the board. "Okay, you have crayons and markers in your pencil bag, three notebooks, and daddy made you a sandwich for lunch. Are you ready?"
"More ready than dad is," She giggled, swinging her braids around. Then she stomped her foot, "Dad, come on. You know the classroom better than I do!"
Ben came over and gave Adelaide a smile before picking her up and spinning her around. "Come on, Addy. Do you want me to leave that bad?"
She nodded, "Shouldn't you be writing music or something with Uncle Danny?"
Ben grinned and shook his head, "I took the day off."
"It's my first day," Adelaide told him, stomping her foot and putting her hands on her hips.
Ben nudged me, "She gets that attitude from you."
"I know," I smiled, giving her a big hug and a kiss, then Ben did the same.
He said before closing the door, "We'll be here to pick you up at four."
"I know, dad."
When we walked out, Ben took a few steps back and peeked in the door's window. "Ben, okay. Come on. We're the last parents leaving."
"And I'll be the first fucking parents here this afternoon," He smiled, putting his arm over my shoulder. He kissed my cheek, "Because we're the best parents."
"You're the most embarrassing parent," I laughed.
We went back home and I sketched out a new design for Ben's clothing line. He busted into the room and said, "What do you think they're doing?"
I rolled my eyes, "We'll find out when Addy gets home and tells us all about it."
He plopped down in a chair and threw his head back, "I'm used to her being here everyday."
I walked over to him and sat on his lap, "Honey, I'm the stay at home mom. I'm used to being around her 24/7. Okay?"
He ran his hands through my hair, "You what what we don't get to do when she's around though?"
I grabbed the collar of his leather jacket and pulled him into a kiss. He wrapped his arms around me, and then there was a knock at the door. I pulled away and got up, and he groaned, "Are you fucking kidding me?"
I opened the door to find Danny standing there. "Hey, so I heard it was Addy's first day. I wanted to come to pick her up," He smiled and invited himself into the kitchen, going straight for the fridge.
Ben came trotting down the stairs, "Danny, you fucking cockblock!"
"Oh! You guys were gonna have sex?" He laughed, helping himself to leftover boneless chicken wings from the night before. "I won't bother you guys if you still want to."
"Nah, I'm not in the mood," I shrugged, plucking a wing from his plate and popping it in my mouth.
We all just watched Jackass until four o'clock rolled around, and then we got i the car. When we arrived right on time, Addy ran straight to Danny. Ben rolled his eyes and sneered, "Danny, what a cute daughter you have! You're so lucky!"
Adelaide rolled her eyes, another thing she picked up from me, and whispered, "Sorry, Uncle Danny. Daddy's been really weird today."
She gave Ben a hug, and then me. Danny rubbed his hands together, "How about we round up the lads and go to dinner so we can hear all about Addy's first day?"
"Sounds good to me," I said, patting Adelaide on the back. "Lets get home and get ready then."
We went home, got dressed in nicer clothes, and I redid Addy's braids. Then just after six, we met the guys at Applebees. Ten appetizers later, James smiled at Adelaide, "So how was your first day, kiddo?"
"It went really well," She smiled.
I smiled, too. I loved the way Adelaide talked. Because Ben had an accent and I didn't, some of her words sounded like she was from England, but others sounded as American as could be.
Her smile dropped though. "Something bad happened on the playground, though."
"What's happened, darling?" Ben asked protectively.
She shrugged, "A girl pulled my hair and said I had a weird family, because my dad leaves all the time with my fake uncles."
"Hey, you don't have a weird family. You know what family is? People that love you," Sam said.
Ben said, "Honey, what does my chest tattoo say?"
She looked up from her food, "Family first."
"Exactly," He nodded. "Just because we all leave sometimes doesn't mean you're not the only thing on my mind while I'm gone, okay?" Addy's smile lit back up. Ben kissed my cheek, "You and your mommy, of course."
As we ate for a bit, she busted out, "Oh! Something else happened, too. A boy said that his father told him that Uncle Sam and Cam are faggots, but I don't know what that means."
Everyone got quiet. Sam looked down, and Cam bit his lip, and then left the table. James called after him, but he just kept walking to the bathroom. I snapped, "Well, I'll be calling the school about that." I said, slamming my fork down. "Don't ever say that word again, okay?"
Addy nodded, and she looked like she was going to cry. Ben put his hand on her shoulder and said, "Honey, this isn't your fault. That boy is a prick, that's all."
"Don't say that word either," Danny added.
Sam got up and quietly said, "I'll go get Cam."
When they both returned back to our silent table, Addy said with a shaking voice, "I'm sorry Uncle Cam. I didn't mean to make you angry with me."
He shook his head and smiled, "I'm not mad at you, sweetheart." He looked to Sam, "Six years together and people still can't get over it, huh?"
Sam shrugged, "Fuck 'em."
"Cheers to that," Danny said, and we all raised our glasses.
