Ben sat next to me in the office as we waited to see if we were having an Adelaide or an Oliver. By this time, my stomach had gotten quite big and my cravings gotten crazy as well. He held my hand as we looked on the screen of the ultrasound. The doctor smiled, "It's definitely a girl."
I smiled at the thought of a little Adelaide running around the house eventually. I knew Ben was hoping for a boy, but when I looked over to him, a single tear was dripping down his cheek. Ben didn't cry often. I wiped his face, "What is it?"
"Nothing, It was just thinking," He gulped and smiled, "Daddy's little girl, you know?
On the way home, Ben seemed really happy that he was going to have a daughter, but he tried to play it off like he still wanted a boy. "Maybe his dick is just really small still."
"Honey," I laughed, touching his arm, "Let it go."
He rolled his eyes, but kept a smile on his face. Then he said, "Oh! I have to stay somewhere overnight next week. Is that okay? It's a signing for the new clothing release at Tilly's in New York and I don't want to fly there in the morning and come back that night, too. If you don't--"
"Babe, it's fine, I'll be okay for one night." I said, "What day?"
"Thursday," He said.
I nodded, "I have an appointment that day, I'll have Sam drive me."
"Fine, just anyone but James."
"I thought you guys were cool now?" I rolled my eyes and looked out the window.
He tapped on the steering wheel, I could tell he was getting irritated. "He just made a comment the other day and it really pissed me off."
"Don't worry about it, okay?" I smiled, putting my hand on his leg. "I'm your wife, remember?"
The next week was spent buying clothes for little Adelaide. Ben was so excited. He was getting little converse and vans and baby clothes from Spencer's, and more stuffed animals. He even gave in and bought some pink stuff. "I thought we weren't doing that?" I laughed at the checkout counter.
He shrugged and grinned, "I had to."
That night, we went out to a real fancy restaurant for the first time in forever. I had to buy a new dress, because this was one of those types of restaurants. I simple, flowing red dress and some black flats made me realize how uncomfortable being pregnant really was. When I was in sweatpants, a hoodie, and converse, I wasn't bothered so much.
"You look gorgeous," Ben smiled, but I could tell he was fighting back a laugh as he watched me awkwardly sit down.
"Shut up," I said bluntly, finding it ver hard to get comfortable.
When we tapped our wine glasses together (mine full of water), Ben smiled, "To our daughter."
I had to stop myself from breaking out into tears.
I ordered a steak and it just wasn't right. Not only was I being horribly picky, but they didn't cook it the right way either. "Is your okay?" I asked Ben, probably for the fifth time.
"It's still fine," He said, shaking his head.
I sipped my water and stared at my food. Ben dropped his fork on the plate and said, "Do you wanna just swing through a Taco Bell drive though?"
"Yes." I nodded. He dropped some cash on the table, stood up and looked at me. I gawked, "Excuse me, a little help?"
He rolled his eyes and helped me out of the dainty little chair. "You're so needy."
"You did this to me," I muttered.
"Alex," He laugghed as we walked back to the car. "Shut the fuck up."
