"Ben, I fucking hate you!" I barked, squeezing his hand tighter.
He laughed, "Love you, too, babe."
"No way! Fuck you!" I said, throwing my head back. When women said that labor was painful, they weren't exaggerating. I thought I was going to die. I closed my eyes and hoped it was over soon. "We're never ever having sex again! I'm never going through this again!"
"Oh, now that's a little much," Ben laughed. Then Adelaide was actually born, and Ben fainted. That's right-- big rockstar Ben Bruce passed out in the delivery room.
My first time holding her was crazy. I never really wanted a kid until I was holding her in my arms. She had Ben's nose and chin and my eyes and ears.I always thought babies were awkward and ugly, but she was reasonably cute, and I couldn't hold back tears. When Ben was able to, he held her for the first time and I saw a side of him I didn't even know existed-- the protective, loving side of Ben.
"I love you, Adelaide," He whispered, laying the lightest kiss on her forehead.
The first time bringing her home, Ben had me videotape the car ride. It was really just a 20 minute video of Adelaide sleeping in the backseat of the car.
When we got home, Ben but her right in her crib and sat in the room with her. He was tapping at his phone and he finally looked up at me, "The boys are coming over."
Before I could object, I heard the door bust open. Danny boomed, "How are the miracle parents!?"
Ben rolled his eyes and ran to the stairs. "Shut the fuck up, asshole! She's sleeping," Ben screamed whispered.
The boys all stopped in their tracks and stopped talking. They quietly came up stairs and all peered into the crib. "Oh my god," Sam said, smiling so wide thought he was going to start jumping up and down. "Look how cute she is."
"Can I hold her?" James asked, a genuine smile on his face.
Ben looked him over skeptically and then gently lifted Adelaide out of the crib, handing her to James. He cradled her in his arms and smiled, "Congratulations. I'm really happy for you two."
James handed her to Sam, and she woke up. she gave a stretch and a little yawn, and I saw Ben smile proudly. She really was a cute baby.
Things weren't always so cute though. Eventually she started teething, and crying every second of the day-- and the night. "Ben, please go settle her down, I did it an hour ago," I begged, staring a the celing in the dark, listening to her cry hysterically.
He crawled out od bed and trudged to her room. Finally after ten minutes, she stopped crying and Ben stayed in the room for a while. Just as I was falling asleep, he tiptoed back into the room. As soon as the door shut, Adelaide woke up and was set off again.
"Fuck!" I groaned, and we both just sat in her room for the rest of the night.
Then there was the first time that Ben left on tour again-- for an entire year around the world. The band had taken a a year off, and the fans were eager to see them in action again. Two days after Adelaide first birthday, the tickets for the tour went on sale. Two days later, they were sold out.
Ben cried, I cried, Adelaide cried as we stood on the front steps. He held her in his arms as long as he could. "Bye, daddy," She said, placing her little hand on his cheek.
"Bye, sweetheart," He said, kissing her forehead before handing her over to me. I gave him a kiss and a hug and he got in the cab waiting at the end of the driveway.
"Wave goodbye," I said, and we waved him off until the cab disappeared at the end of the street.
Every night, Adelaide would cry for Ben. I'd have to call him for her to go to sleep. One night, he even stopped playing in the middle of a song to say goodnight. That got him a special page in Rocksound, Revolver, and AP that month. Then a year later when he got home, it was almost her birthday again, and she was already running around like a wild child.
As soon as he stepped off of the shuttle in the airport, she wrestled her way out of my arms and ran towards him. I didn't bother chasing after her, because he ran up to her and swooped her in the air with the biggest smile on her face. As he walked closer to me, hugging her tight. As he walked closer I heard her say, "I missed you daddy."
"I missed you to sweetheart," He smiled, kissing her cheek.
He looked me straight in the eye and smirked, "Holy fuck, did I miss you."
I pulled him into a kiss and Adelaide giggled, "Ew."
"What?" Ben laughed. "What's funny? Hm? You tihnk it's funny when I kiss mommy?"
Adelaide just giggled away as we started back to the car.
