Reyna's POV
I strike up a conversation with Ember, one of the Hunters that I remember seeing in San Juan. She has been a Hunter for over a decade, she tells me. She was a Greek demigod, a daughter of Athena. She joined the Hunters when she was fourteen, which is the age she will be forever.
"Why did you join the Hunters?" She asks. "You didn't seem to thrilled to see us in San Juan, so why would you suddenly abandon your praetorship in exchange for an eternity of us?" I close my eyes and raise my face to the sky, cooling myself with the gentle breeze. "I knew that I was leaving my praetorship in good hands when I gave it to Hazel. And I wanted to do this before it was too late, before I was too old. I knew, as Aphrodite has once told me, I would never fall in love with a mortal. I was done with that. So I decided that this was the best choice I could make- to spend my eternity hunting monsters with the Hunters of Artemis."
Ember nods thoughtfully. "Did you know Thalia before this?" She asks. "Cuz you guys seem pretty close..." I shake my head. "She kidnapped me once, and then I tried to kill her, but other than that we don't know each other too well." Ember laughs, "I remember that. You were vicious, for a mortal." I squint at Ember in the firelight. "What's Thalia usually like?" I ask. Ember smiles. "She's amazing.
She's rude, has terrible manners, is extremely sarcastic and loud. Which is pretty much what makes her so great. She doesn't care about what people think of her. She's just Thalia Grace, and whether you like it or not is your problem, not hers."
