Chapter one

John Watson, sitting in his armchair, drinking tea, newspaper in hand, barely taking in the article as Sherlock talked on and on, chainsawing the violin.

"Will you stop it!" John finally said after a good thirty minutes.

"I'm thinking John, composing helps me think."

When John didn't say anything, Sherlock continued, "Anything interesting?"

John glanced up, a look of feigned surprise etched all over his face. "What-In the newspaper? Oh I don't know, that's what I was doing for the last half hour if someone wasn't trying to blow my ears off!"

Sherlock ignored his last comment, pacing, the awful noises of the violin never stopping. "Mycroft called yesterday."

Eyes fixated on the newspaper, John said, "about what?"

"A case. Of governmental importance apparently."

Still not looking at him, John replied, "so why didn't you take it? Don't tell me it was just to spite your brother."

Sherlock put his violin aside, and sat opposite John. "Do you remember all those disappearances?"

This forced John to look up, "what disappearances?" He watched patiently as Sherlock put his fingers to his temples, obviously exasperated.

"The disappearances John! In the newspapers, on TV, on the Internet, everywhere!" He continued to go on, not aware of his companion's lack of interest. "Archie Gladworth, never returned home from his visit to the museum; Susan Carter, not seen since three months ago, and the most recent one, Elizabeth Wilson, together with her husband, disappeared only yesterday after going to her mother's grave."

"Yeah, and this is related to your talk with Mycroft how?"

"Oh John even a simple mind like yours could surely work this out."

One day I might just punch him. John thought to himself, but resisted the temptation. Instead he asked, "so, Mycroft  wants you to catch the culprit whose taking these people?"

"No, it's far more complicated than that." His tone was lofty and very nearly attracting a serious punch in the face.

John set his tea aside, "so you do want to take the case but just because it's your brother whose asking for help you won't?"

Sherlock seemed to ponder the question, "yes..." He finally said, "I mean no, no, this is becoming interesting." He was staring at the paper. "John, look at that article."

John looked over his newspaper and saw Sherlock pointing at the back, eyes gleaming with the light that only a good old murder would bring. He turned the newspaper around and the caption read, "Mysterious Disappearance Intrigues Officers," the gist of the article seemed to be obvious.

"Another disappearance," Sherlock murmured as he flicked the paper from John's hand and perused the article,

"Gabriel E. Darlington, now this is getting interesting..." His eyes widened as if struck by a sudden burst of inspiration. "

"Come on John, we're going."

John spluttered incoherently but Sherlock was already pulling on his long coat and rapping the blue scarf around his neck.

"Sherlock, where are we going?"

The detective didn't stop in his actions, still straightening his coat and turning up the collar. "Look at the article John, really look at it."

With that, he was off.
