Chapter twelve

It didn't take long for John to find a weeping angel. It was almost as if the angel had found him and not the other way around.

You know those weird moments when it feels like someone's watching you? That strange tickly feeling down the back of your neck and the hairs stand on end? Usually when you turn around there's nothing there, *cough* yeah, right *cough*, but when John bolted around it was just in time to see the angel four feet away from him.

Despite everything, John kept calm. Eyes fixed firmly on the angel, he fished his phone from his pockets and dialed the number, slowly raising it to ear level.

"John? Are you alright?" Sherlock's urgent voice came from the end.

"Yeah, I found it. I found the angel."

"Well where are you?"

"You remember the place where we started?"

It was hard for someone to sound indignant, but Sherlock managed, "yes, of course I do."

John sighed, all the time trying desperately not to blink. The sun was getting in his eyes now and they were watering from the strain of keeping up after such a long time, "head east and walk for about five minutes, the angel's here."

"John," he said, voice low with urgency, "there's only one?"

"Yes there's only the one."

"I got one, too"

John's mind went blank, it had never occurred to him that there might be more than one angel. The idea seemed stupid now, that if there was this supposedly alien invasion of earth that there would only be one alien to invade.

"So there's more," John said, his voice steady though his mind was shaking, "and we can't move less they take us back to the past."

There was a pause between the two, and John stared continuously at the angel. He wondered how such a vial creature could be called an angel when in fact, it was the quite the opposite. But then again, it was only nature's curse that brought to earth such a creature, and by all natural instincts, that must include hunting and consuming, it was merely a hunt, a game that the angel was accustomed to playing, and he was the prey.

"John," Sherlock's voice was now an indistinctive murmur, "there's more of them, two now, or three, there could be more on the way. I can't be sure."

John's mind instantly went into panic mode, with all the brain cells working at maximum speed, trying to find a solution to Sherlock's predicament.

"I'll phone Lestrade, and I'm coming over, just keep them all in sight. And don't blink." He then started to turn around, keeping the angel in view all the time.

"Don't John, they'll only overwhelm you too," (he wasn't quite sure whether Sherlock had said you, too, or you two) "They're moving, all of them, all at once. I'm trying to watch them but they're just getting closer. Every second. They're about fifty feet away from me now but all closing in, forming a circle" The tone of Sherlock's voice was identical to the one he'd shown when he stated that he saw the Hound, scared and inconsolable.

John started backing away from the angel, slowly at first, but then breaking into a backwards run. He nearly tripped several times but having once been a soldier, kept his balance nonetheless.

"I didn't use to believe in these farfetched things as time travel and aliens, though theoretically speaking they were an unavoidable possibility. The world is so much madder than I originally thought." He took a sharp intake of breath, then continued. "This Doctor, John, try and help him, after all, it is your-"

The phone cut short at that exact moment, followed by the monotonic beep.

"Sherlock? SHERLOCK!!" John yelled into his phone, then he broke all pretense as he turned around and sprinted to the place where Sherlock Holmes had stood, moments ago.
