Chapter Five: Rescue Mission Gone Wrong

It was the third night being with the company of Thorin Oakenshield, and I was starting to feel like I finally belonged somewhere. I had never actually had a place to call home, but with them I had something that was worth so much more than a home. They were practically family, because they treated me like I mattered instead of ignoring me every second of every day. After the night I had the nightmare Fili and I had gotten closer, but nothing really blossomed. We just started to talk more, and get to know more about each other. I started to notice how different we were from each other but at the same time I wished we had more in common.

Thorin decided to stop for the night, and Fili and Kili were put of pony duty yet again, Bofur was put on guard duty again, Oin and Gloin had to get the fire started again, and Bombur and I were put on food preparation.

I had gotten a cut on my cheek from Kili and I sparing the last time we stopped, though it hurts every now and then from the heat coming off of the fire it was definitely worth the fun!

~ Flashback~

"Come on Kili please!" I pleaded with my green eyes shining with a playful sparkle.

"Alright I'll spar with you but I'm not using a stick and I'm not going easy on you!" He smirked.

"Great!"

A few minutes later and I felt a sting go through my cheek when I spun around to attack him. His sword was dangerously close to my face, well it had already cut through a few layers of skin, but I had so much adrenaline that I never even stopped to process what had actually happened. When Kili turned around his eyes when wide, and his sword was knocked out of his hand by me tossing it away with my own.

"Scar you're bleeding!" He retorted stepping over and wiping a streak of blood that had run down to my jaw line.

"I am?" I questioned bringing a hand up to my cheek, then pulled it away to see crimson warm blood on my fingers. "Huh... I am!" I replied with a chuckle not even caring or feeling it at all.

"Sorry Scar, I never meant to cut you!" He added looking disappointed in himself more than anything.

"Eh... its fine it doesn't even hurt! I'm a lot tougher that I look their Kee!" I replied with a smile pushing his shoulder hard enough that he had to take a step.

~End of flashback~

Thorin was walking in my direction as I was helping Bombur with making food. I didn't think anything of it because I thought he was just going to walk by me to talk to Balin or something, but he walked up to me and took my chin in his hand. He turned my gaze towards his and examined my cheek, and it was still bleeding a good amount but it had slowed down to the point that I didn't worry about it. Honestly I had forgotten about it.

"Does it hurt?" He asked concerned.

"What? Oh that! No, to be honest I don't even feel it anymore!" I replied with a smile, but that smile didn't really reach my eyes cause that's when he had touched it. I took a sharp inhale of air at the contact and took a quick step back from him.

"Sorry." He retorted. "I was just seeing weather or not it was getting infected, because it looked a little red around the edges. I would like Oin to take a look at it if you would allow him to?" He added with a caring tone.

"I can tough it out, I'm not as weak as I look Thorin. I'll be fine, trust me!" I replied going back to what I was doing.

"Very well it looks as if you are as stubborn as a dwarf!" He mumbled, but I just pretended not to hear him.
