Cloned- By Rae Ann Roberts
Chapter Two- Place of Meeting
You could tell that the boss was a bit tense from the way his shoulders were so tight and how he was walking a lot faster than normal. He wanted this cloning thing to pass as much as I did which was saying something.
It didn't take long for us to get to the place of meeting where I would have to give my presentation. I was so nervous about it that I could feel the sweat clamming up my hands. I was even shaking a bit which i would need to get under control before I went to speak or else I wouldn't ever stop hearing about it from the boss for who knows how long.
"Are you ready to go inside?" he asked in his authoritive voice. Unlike mine probably be, his wasn't shaky in the least bit.
When I was sure I could give the presentation I nodded my head and the boss opened the door with a flourish. I plastered a smile on my face as I took my place up at the podium. My hands were still shaking a bit so I hid them as best I could behind the podium. I looked out over all of the people staring at me and almost froze up. The look from my boss though told me to begin speaking or he wasn't going to be very happy with me.
"Welcome everyone," I said with more confidence than I was feeling. "Today you've all been invited to hear about the project I've been working on for a few years now. As you all know we are verging on extinction with no way to stop it. Well I believe my team and I have come up with something that will work. If you will look at the screen please."
I motioned to the screen behind me and began in with what it was my team and I had been working on. "In a matter of days we could double the size of our population with the use of a cloning device."
Murmurs flowed throughout the room as people thought about the possibility of cloning a person. When the room quieted back a down a bit I began to move on through my slide show. "Our test subject was man by the name of Adam. We found him on the streets and was more than happy to help with our project. So after two other failed tests we managed to fix the problems with the device and succussfully cloned Adam.
"Now here you will see that everything went well and Adam is healthy as ever. His clone, who we call Clone 3, is also in the same condition but with some interesting qualities." I flipped over to the image that showed Clone 3 in his full glory. "He has odd purple eyes and almost perfect skin. Not only that but his running speed is faster than any human and his strength is great as well. We have reason to believe that the cloning device makes like a super human version of yourself."
This time the room erupted into excited talking. People spoke about all the possibilities with these clones and what a great thing they would be to the population. As far as I could tell everyone was already on board and I wasn't even finished speaking yet. I still needed to tell them of the odd personality change though which I knew would be a less liked pointed of the cloning. It needed to be said though as a precaution to everyone who wished to be cloned.
As I was about to say this my boss instead came over with a huge smile on his face. "You've done well Delphine. I can take it from here."
"Sir," I spoke in a hushed voice that only he would be able to hear, "we still need to speak about the personality change in the clones."
My boss clapped me on the shoulder and shook his head. "Best keep that between you and me Delphine. We've already sold the idea and we don't need anything to ruin it. As I said, you've done well." With that he gestured for me to take a seat where he had been moments before. As I sat down though I thought about how this could all come back to bite us.
What if the weird personality thing is something very important and we're missing it? I couldn't think of it now though because my boss was now speaking once again, making plans to start cloning everyone in the world with my device.
___
August 9th, 2061
Dear Diary,
The meeting went well today which is something I had hoped for. However something has come to my attention with Clone 3 that I am starting to wonder if it's going to become an issue with the program. You see Clone 3 has a certain hate to us humans that is startling me a bit. I never really thought about it until today but it's actually scaring me a little bit. My boss will not let me speak of it to anyone else which makes things even worse.
To make sure I am not paranoid though I have decided to do another clone test to see if we come up with the same results. However I would never be allowed to do it in the lab again so I have taken it upon myself to use the device on myself. I will use a few days before the world gets cloned and hopefully it will still give me a few days to look into the personality change.
The world cloning process will take place on August 26th so I decided I would give myself ten days to study my clone. I will clone myself on August 16th without my team or anyone else for that matter. One can only hope that what I am noticing is only a minor detail with Clone 3 and not every clone that is about to be made.
In Worry,
Delphine
___
"Delphine I'm home," yelled my brother from downstairs. I was a bit startled to hear him come in so late considering I had been hunched over my diary, lost in my own thoughts.
The door opened as my brother walked in, coming to stand behind me. I made sure to shut my diary before he saw what was written in it. "So how did the meeting go today?" he asked.
"Why don't you turn on the TV and see for yourself. It's all over the news that the world is about to be cloned in order to double the size of the population." I grabbed up the remote sitting next to me and went ahead to turn the TV on for him. As I had thought it was all over the news, people talking about how it would soon be a requirement for everyone to get a clone. On August 26th in fact which was a date much to close for my liking.
"You don't look too happy about it," my brother said, rubbing my shoulder in sympathy.
"I'm just worried something will go wrong is all." My brother pulled me into a hug then, telling me everything would be alright. I on the other hand had high doubts that weren't leaving my mind easily.
