"Good gracious, if I were anyone else I'd say you packed for at least 15 years, max." Brittany groaned, picking up the biggest suitcase yet.

Shutting the trunk to my tiny black Nissan, I walked alongside Brittany to my new place. "Oh shush."

The door to my apartment was already open and on the first floor, in which I was very grateful for. I didn't even want to imagine carrying all of my luggage up the stairs. The complex itself was very white and looked very, expensive. But the truth was, it wasn't. In fact, it was the cheapest place I could find. I was impressed with how good the complex smelled considering the amount of cigarette butts scattered on the ground outside.

We entered the apartment and placed the luggage down with loud thuds. Finally, space. It was exactly what I needed and had hoped for.

"Wow," I muttered, taking everything in such as the brand new smell, bigger space, and calmness.

Every wall was painted a flattering coffee brown color which made me even happier to get started on decorations. As I sat on the floor and began opening my suitcase, Brittany spoke.

"Hold on, superwoman. I don't know if you remember but you did feed me tacos before we got here." And with that, she quickly ran past me to the bathroom.

Turning my attention back to my unzipped luggage, I sighed knowing the nice smell in this apartment would soon be dead and gone after Brittany was done. I ran my hands over several random objects before stopping on one of my favorite books. What Happened To Goodbye by Sarah Dessen. A smile crept onto my face as I remembered some of my favorite parts.

Looking around some more, my eyes landed on some old CDs. Most of the cases were cracked which made them look even more sadder. Not caring to see them, I shuffled some random papers on top of them; only to spot my first and only love letter.

Oh god.

Without thinking my hand grasped the wrinkled paper. Any other time, I'd ignore the stupid letter. Hell, I still didn't even know why I'd kept it for so long. After trying my best to not reread the words on the paper for the millionth time, my eyes wandered across them.

dear beautiful,

I don't know how I was blessed with the right of calling you mine, but I was. I intend to continue calling you mine until the day I die. you're all I've ever wanted hayley, always remember that. I wouldn't trade you for the world.

love you, Josh

Frustratingly, I leaned back onto the wall and crumbled the note up in my tiny hands. I shouldn't have been so vulnerable to his words. But of course, the 16 year old me was reckless and had believed in happy endings. That's changed though. Now that I'm finally away from Norfolk, I don't have to worry about pleasing the people around me. Especially Josh.

Two months after giving me the letter, Josh began to change. He started distancing himself from me. For the longest time I felt something was wrong with me. I had convinced myself that I was the problem; I was the one who had changed. And that had caused him to leave. But, eventually I found out the truth.

Josh's feelings for me had vanished. Boom! Gone. Just like that. When he had explained to me what was going on, I was still certain I was the one that messed up. Now, looking back on it all, I should've known he was cheating on me.

The night he confessed all of his feelings towards me were gone, he broke up with me. Yes, I cried day and night. With that one letter, he had almost convinced me that happy endings really were true.

Suddenly, Brittany appeared around the corner. "Yeah, um, this place is gonna stink for a while."

Clearly she had noticed the paper in my hand because she sat down beside me and leaned against the wall. We stayed there for a moment, in silence. The only sound there was was the sound of the air conditioner. That was until she whispered.

"I think its time you threw that away, Hayles."

It was true. All the letter did was bring back the most heartbreaking part of my life. I definitely didn't need it around. This, all of this, was my new start.

Getting up, I walked over Brittany and stopped at the door, glancing back at her. "You know what, you're right."

She gave me a smile.
