"Slow down!" I said, excitedly. His hand was still in mine, as he pulled me along the streets, farther and farther away from the school.
I didn't know where we were going, but something about it seemed so spontaneous, it intrigued me.
And I wanted so badly for Harry to like me - to fall for me - that I needed to go along with this. It was basically in my requirements.
"We're almost there, hun," he reassured me.
I felt my heart skip a beat. I did honestly like it when he called me 'hun' or 'babe' or anything like it. It just seemed like he was being affectionate.
We travelled down a winding trail, and I had a faint idea of where we were. It seemed like we were heading towards a private park where people often went to smoke or just take a nap instead of go to class.
"You took me here to smoke?" I guessed, slowing down my pace.
"Nah, unless you want to," he said, looking over at me. To be honest, I hated smoking, but I knew a lot of people did it at our school.
"Well, what did you want to do? Since you brought me here," I said, walking into the open area.
"Maybe sit on a park bench, talk a little, kiss a little..."
He was cheeky, I'll give him that.
"We'll see," I replied, grinning. I walked ahead of him, pulling him along. There were only a couple students here, not too many.
It was definitely peaceful. Nicer than going to class.
"You know Blake," he said, going faster to catch up to me. "You're honestly so hard to read."
"You said that last night," I told him, turning to face him.
"I know, but I just...I can't seem to stop thinking about how much you confuse me," he explained. He was struggling to find the right words.
"So, you think about me?" I didn't want to give him a straight answer. He needed to keep interested in me.
This game was incredibly tricky.
"All the time," he confirmed. "I know we only started dating, but I just can't get you out of my mind."
I smiled at that. That was nice.
"And, you just seem so cool and in control of everything. I admire that," he said, softly. We had stopped walking.
I was now facing him, and he moved to put his arms around my waist. I leaned forward and gave him a kiss. He was a sweet and gentle kisser, and I quite enjoyed it.
I allowed myself a few more seconds of bliss, before pulling away.
"What's happened to you?" I asked, softly. "You're not that player I kept turning down. You seem different now."
I was determined to get down to why he was such an arse to every girl.
"I can be whoever you want me to be," he said softly.
I should have studied that comment more thoroughly than I did. It was true, Harry could be whoever he wanted to be. He knew girls that well - he knew how to switch from one personality to another. He aimed to please.
But, I pushed those thoughts away. And just nodded.
"So, can I ask you something?" I wondered.
"Anything."
"Did you date Janet?" I wondered.
Oh God. I don't know where that question came from - but I was just so damn curious.
He hesitated. His mouth opened but no sound came out, and I knew I probably took it too far. We didn't know each other that well yet - I should've waited. Damn me and my stupid curiosity. I guess it was in my journalistic nature.
"Erm, sort of," he said, shrugging.
"How do you sort of date someone?" As in the words of Mean Girls, these sentences just kept coming up like word vomit. I couldn't stop it.
"Well, you know me," he explained, detached now. "I'm not really the serious kind of guy."
"Don't I know it," I snorted.
"Well," he continued, "she didn't. We had a miscommunication, that's all."
"Well, she doesn't seem like it was that simple."
"Janet overdramatizes everything."
And now Harry was back to being the jerk I knew. Sure, Janet's a bitch, but the way he talked about her was disheartening. His voice was so uncaring - like he really didn't even give the girl a second thought. It was like she was a minor speed bump and he got rid of her.
But, I couldn't show my disappointment. Because then he would get scared and run off.
So I just nodded.
"Yeah, she does," I told him.
"You guys hate each other, right?"
"Does everyone know?"
He laughed. "No, she just told me you stole Liam from her."
I rolled my eyes. "That's untrue! Liam dated me after her."
"But he left her for you."
Okay, I could argue about this all day. Or I could simply use it to my advantage that I had major pull (well, I didn't...put I was just going to give myself the benefit of the doubt.)
"Well, what can I say?" I asked, smirking. "I must be some catch."
"You certainly are," he agreed, putting his arm around my shoulders. "But, it is definitely over between you and Liam, right?"
"Yep," I confirmed. I really believed it was. "We just weren't working out."
"I would say I'm sorry, but then I wouldn't be able to do this -"
And he kissed me again. Short and sweet.
"And that would be terrible," I said, jokingly. "But, I thought you and Liam were close friends."
"We are...sort of," he replied, biting his lip in thought. "He's cool - I just don't get to see him that often at school. No classes together."
"So, you're not breaking some boy code by dating me?" I wondered.
"I probably am," he responded.
"Well, then aren't you breaking a rule?"
He smirked.
"Blake, don't you know I don't play by the rules?"
No, he certainly did not. That's why his game was impossible to play.
