Time After Time

"Sometimes you picture me, I'm walking too far ahead. You're calling to me, I can't hear what you've said. Then you say, 'Go slow.' I fall behind, the second hand unwinds. If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me, time after time. If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting, time after time."

Strange how the heart works, isn't it? No matter what your brain tells you about someone and how to feel about them, the heart has it's own ideas.
The brain and the heart always seem to conflict, because the brain likes to keep things smart and simple, whereas quite frankly, the heart just likes to be difficult.
No wonder they can never agree on anything.

        "Do you?"
Owen, paused and turned back to look at Amelia, who's gotten up from her chair.
        "Have people?"
"I, um, that's, I- I'm fine." He responded with an empty chuckle.
"I know. But you're right there, living in the little tin box on my brother's back lawn. I mean, I keep saying I'm going to move out, but I'm still up at the house watching them glare at each other, so-"
        Owen gave another light laugh.
"So, let me know, if you, you know, if you need people." She smiled as the unidentifiable feeling swept across Owen's entire being. "I'm around." Amelia's last words faded and melted into the sound of an alarm going off, the alarm that meant it was time for Owen Hunt to start his day.
He shut off the alarm and sat up, rubbing his eyes and thinking about the dream he'd just been having.
Maybe it was less of a dream, and more of a memory. He remembered having this conversation back when she was very new to the hospital, he'd been concerned that she was fighting her addiction problems alone.
He was surprised when, for the first time in his life, someone responded by asking if he was alright, being concerned about him, caring for his wellbeing.
He remembered being taking aback. For so long, he'd worked up in his head what he would say if someone finally asked him if he was alright, but that was years ago, he was taken by surprise and had no response for Dr Shepherd when she asked him.
He couldn't help but wonder if Amelia was doing alright now, though he knew she wasn't. When he asked if she had "people" a year ago, she had Meredith, and Derek, and the kids. Now she's lost Derek, Meredith and her had drifted apart, and she barely ever saw the kids unless Meredith needed her to babysit while she went out with her people.
For the first time in a while, Owen realized that Amelia must be as alone as ever, the terrifying thought that she could be close to relapse refused to leave the back of his mind. He told himself that he shouldn't care, he was trying to salvage his pride and cut his ties with Amelia.
But Owen has always been the kind of person who would care, no matter the history. The sooner he remembered that, the better.

"Her pupils are unresponsive, page Shepherd." Meredith yelled in the E.R, as she, Hunt, and Kepner, dealt with an unidentified patient who'd been brought in from a car accident.
Meredith was paged, signifying that she was needed elsewhere, Owen assured her that he and April had got it under control, and she back down to the pit.
Hunt and Kepner had a hell of a time keeping the patient from bleeding out in the E.R, they'd come to the conclusion that she was bleeding internally. Amelia seemed to be taking her time, they really needed neuro down there to take a look at her as soon as possible.
This irritated Owen on a less professional level. He scoffed silently and rolled his eyes. Typical. She's taking her time and messing around, like she doesn't even realize she could be hurting people or putting them in danger. Of course, this was Owen letting his personal feelings get in the way of his job once more.
Finally, Amelia came through the door and immediately pulled out her pocket light. "What happened here?"
"Sure took you long enough. The patient could have been dead if you'd taken any longer." Owen said coldly, April looked back and forth from him to Dr Shepherd, confused. She hesitated, but began to describe the patient's condition.
"Car accident, she hit another car, but the passengers only suffered minor injuries, they're down in the pit getting sutured. She has some internal bleeding that we should get at sooner than later."
Amelia looked thankful for April's presence, knowing that all she would get from Owen was shouting.
Dr Shepherd could tell just from the way the patients pupils were reacting that she probably had a brain bleed.
"Get her a head C.T, and prep an O.R." She told April, who nodded and left to do so.
"Does she have people?" Amelia asked carelessly before she realized that the words that had just left her mouth had been said by her before. Quite a while ago, to none other than Owen Hunt himself.
Owen blinked, remembering one of their first real conversations and recalling the dream he'd had before he woke up.
They both shared a moment of silence as Amelia's cheeks flushed and Owen cleared his throat.
"Family. Does she have family?" Amelia corrected herself.
"She's a Jane Doe, no I.D, she was alone in the car, nothing."
Amelia nodded sadly, the worst cases were the ones who had nobody.
