Hey guys!  So, this is my first book and I really hope that you enjoy it!  I'm no Shakespeare, but I hope that I did well.  I had a lot of fun writing it and I have high hopes for it.  So without further ado, here's Choices.  Enjoy!

The almost silent whir of fans and shuffling of papers greeted me. The cool air that they brought gave me much-needed relief from the stifling June heat. It was nice to get out of the summer sun, but I wished the location was different. The DMV was almost the last place on Earth that I wanted to be spending the afternoon.

After taking a number, I found a seat for what was sure to be a ridiculously long wait. Just as I was settling into one of the DMV's uncomfortable hard plastic chairs, my phone began to ring.

I dug through my messy purse, before pulling out the device. I checked the screen, which read "Call from Kitty Kat."

"Kitty Kat," who I usually called Kat and whose real name was Katherine, was one of my best friends from high school. Sadly, we ended up going to different colleges. We did a pretty good job of staying in touch until about our junior year, when we both got busy preparing for our future careers.

I quickly pressed the answer button, anxious to hear the beautiful voice of my friend.

"Hello?"

"Hi, Jenna! It's Kat!"

"Hey Kat! I haven't heard from you in ages! What have you been up to?"

The thing about Kat is that no matter how long it's been since I talked to her, we always picked up right where we left off. I knew that if I hadn't heard from her, it wasn't that she didn't want to talk to me, she was just busy.

"You know, the usual," Kat said. "Just got my Master's and now I'm ready to take on the world."

"Congratulations, Kitty Kat!" I squealed, earning some strange looks from the people around me. "So what's your next step? World domination?"

"Nah," Kat laughed. "I think that you need a Doctorate for that. You know how I added on a music major?"

"Mhmmm?"

"Well, since I have a double major in speech and music, I can become a voice coach!"

This didn't surprise me, as Kat had the voice of an angel. She was the only senior in our whole city who was in All-State Choir all four years of high school. But Kat didn't have the usual pretty voice. No, she had the voice of a church choir lady who could sing opera. And she was a soprano, so she could sing about as high as a dog whistle.

"Oh yeah! You mentioned that before. Is that what you are going to do?"

"Yep!" Kat squealed. "But that's not even the best part. I got a job! That's part of why I called you. And you will never guess who I'm going to work for!"

"Who?!"

I could barely hold in my excitement. Being a vocal coach had always been Kat's dream job. But with her talent, I knew that she could work for almost anyone.

"Syco!!!" Kat screamed at the top of her lungs. I could almost see her doing her signature, adorable happy dance.

I had to hold in a scream of my own by quickly clamping my hand over my mouth.

I knew that Kat had talent, but Syco was about as good as it gets. She would be working with the best of the best. And I was so. dang. proud. Not too shabby for a North Dakota girl, huh?

At that point, I was having a proud mother hen moment and trying not to cry.

"Oh my goooooosh, Kat, that is amazing! I am so proud of you!"

"Thanks Jen! You're the best!"

I spent the rest of my wait talking to Kat. We talked about everything and nothing: our college experiences, our cats, our plans for the future. I was sad when my number was called because I could've talked to her for hours. Before we hung up, we promised to talk again soon.

As I was walking out of the DMV, my phone started to ring, and again, it was Kat.

"Hey Kitty Kat! Miss me already?"

"Eww, no," Kat laughed. "I just realized I forgot to tell you an important detail."

"Okay, what is it?" I asked, waiting for her to say "Hi" or something.

"I found out who I will be coaching. It's One Direction."

And I dropped my phone like it was hot.
