I landed on his front porch, Knock. Knock. I waited as I heard his footsteps reach the door. The door opened and Lalna looked at me, "Ridge...dog?" He looked confused as he realized I wasn't Ridgedog. "Who are you?" He asked boldly. "I am Ridgedog's 15 year old daughter, Kira." I told him. His boldness seemed to shatter as I said Ridgedog's daughter, he looked utterly terrified. "Don't you remember me from the games?" I asked, trying to break the ice. "Oh, your the girl who gave us the items that saved us" he said remembering. "Yes, I got in a fare bit of trouble for it too." I said slightly irritated, but trying to keep a passive look. "I'm sorry!" He said shaking, still not trusting me. He was very scared, the terror in his eyes, his body was racked with shakes, he wouldn't look me in the eyes, I could tell he expected me to be like my father. "Lalna," I said, addressing him by his name for the first time, he jumped. "I don't have anywhere to stay, could I please stay here with you for a short time?" I asked, batting my eyelashes. "I guess...but please call me Duncan..." He mumbled. He led me inside, up a transporter, down a hall and stopped in front of a door, "here, you can stay in this room" he said opening the door, "there is a call box if you need anything." And then he was gone, I could hear his mumbling and trembling fade away. I unpacked my few possessions and sat down on the bed with the little purple cloth in my hand, thinking, reflecting on my life so far. Over the next few days Duncan came to check on me every now and then, he brought me food to eat, but never offered to show me around, or even tell me that I could leave my room, he always just stayed silent. I was sitting on the bed, trembling, the bottle of green liquid in my hands, I grimaced as I took another gulp, it felt like acid hitting my stomach. I had noticed Duncan had watched me drink the liquid every night, today was no different, he stood in the doorway watching me suffer through the drink again. I groaned as I gulped again, "miss?" He asked, his first words since I had come to the house. I turned to look at him, "you look in pain..." He said. "You wouldn't understand" I managed to say, then I took another gulp, almost done. "Why do you drink it if you can't stand it and it hurts?" He asked. "It's a medicine in a way..." I said. I gulped some more down, suddenly there was a hand on my shoulder, I looked up and Duncan was there. I raised the bottle to drink again but he grabbed my hand, and with his other hand, took the bottle from me. "Stop, it hurts to see anyone that pained, whatever the medicine is fighting is probably not as bad as the medicine itself" I just looked at him, "I'm sorry, but i have to finish it or else bad things will happen..." i croaked out, then quickly took the bottle back and gulped down the last of it. Then I was racked with violent shudders, I clutched my stomach, it felt like it was filled with acid. Duncan put his hand awkwardly on my shoulder, not knowing what to do or to say. We sat like that for a few minutes, then the shakes were gone and I felt ok again. "Thank you" I said to him, "no problem" he responded. I grabbed the cloth off the nightstand and twisted it in my fingers, it was calming in a way, helped me to forget the pain I had just been in. Duncan left and I went to sleep, I knew I had broken the ice, he wasn't scared of me anymore, but he thought I was a helpless little girl, who couldn't do anything. I couldn't tell which was worse.
Authors note- no...for anyone who might think, Kira and Duncan will not be a couple...just saying that now so no one gets any ideas! Also, tell me if you enjoy reading this and I will write more!
