I woke up feeling better, Duncan was there staring at me. "Duncan?...why are you staring at me?..." I asked cautiously. "I wanted to make sure you were alright...when I left last night you still looked pained...are you ok now?" He mumbled. "Yeah I'm fine..." I said quietly. I got up and put on the clothes dad had given me, then we went downstairs to the kitchen. While eating some stale cereal, Duncan asked, "do you want to come to work with me? You can meet Xephos and Honeydew." I contemplated it for a second, "sure, I need to meet them sooner or later!". We finished and then flew out toward Honeydew Inc. When we arrived, Xephos and Honeydew were sitting about on the lawn, Xephos looked up and saw me, his face clouded with anger. Honeydew looked and his reaction was of fright, his eyes went big and he hid behind Xephos. Duncan saw their reactions and quickley clarified, "this is...uh...Kira...she's uh...a friend..." Honeydew was still terrified, and Xephos tried to put an emotionless face on but his eyes shone with blind fury and rage. "Well Kira, who are you?" He asked angrily, giving up on emotionless. I looked at him, then up at Duncan who shrugged. "I am Ridgedog's daughter" but before he could say anything I blurted out "but I'm nothing like him, I don't want to cause terror!" He just scowled but said nothing. Honeydew peeked over Xephos's shoulder and looked at me with big scared eyes. They hate me. Why does everyone hate me? Hate. Such a strong word. A feeling that people shouldn't ever feel. But I've felt first hand. Blind fury. From a young age. God my childhood. Pain and misery. Duncan interupted my thoughts. His hand was on my shoulder and he whispered to me "Kira, don't let them get you down. Your a nice kid, they just don't understand." His words weren't really consoling, but it was a kind thought. In my pocket I twisted the little cloth, trying to let my problems slip away with every turn. "Xephos? Will you please play nice for at least a small bit? For me? And properly introduce yourself?" Duncan asked. Xephos sighed angrily, "Fine. But it's only for you Duncan." He said through gritted teeth. "You can call me Lewis, and this is Simon." He said motioning to the dwarf clinging to him. "Hi" Simon squeaked. "Hi, I hope we can be friends sometime" I said. He seemed to be getting less scared, he stepped out from behind Lewis, "yeah maybe..." He said thinking. We all walked inside the factory, Lewis leading the way, we flew up to the pent house level so we could all talk. We all sat around the table, Duncan to my left, an empty chair to my right. Lewis and Simon sat across from us. Unable to contain it, Lewis spit "Duncan! How could you bring such a demon spawn to this factory!?" I whimpered slightly and clutched at the little cloth, "Lewis! Don't say such things about Kira! It's not her fault that her father is an evil god!" Duncan said defending me. Lewis grumbled something about Duncan being protective and in love. " I am not in love!" Duncan shouted. "Lewis?" I asked cautiously "I understand why you would hate my father, but everyone else seemed to be fine with me. Why do you hate Ridgedog so much that you would hate his kid whom you nothing about?" He took an intake of breath and then turned to look at me with a full on glare. "He drags us into his stupid games! He kills us off slowly, turning us into filthy savages! He kills off Hannah every game, and me as well! He makes Hannah's death painful and always spares me to struggle with loss! He makes my life hell!" He screamed at me. I didn't know who this Hannah was, but I could tell she ment a lot to him. "I'm sorry Lewis...if it helps at all, I have seen every death, I have watched in horror as you all turned against each other...but there was nothing I could do. From a young age Ridge would cage me in a little box and use some of his magic so that I could see every death in crystal clear view. I was unable to look away because I could see it behind my eyes. This started when I was 5, a 5 year old should not have that experience. I remember each death like it was my own. And I remember crying myself to sleep for months after each game, I had no mother to intervene with these terrors." Lewis just stared blankly at me, processing what I had told him. "That doesn't mean Ridgedog isn't a cruel hearted murderer and your still his offspring, which means if Ridge is the devil, your devil spawn!" He spit. "Lewis!" I said, getting his attention, "this year was the first year I had gained enough trust to roam free around the games, without seeing all the death. And do you know what I did? I went against my fathers rules and I helped Duncan and Kim! Got in a fare bit of trouble too." I said a tear in my eye, but I held it back. Duncan could see that this was getting to me, so he stood and took Lewis's arm, "Lewis, why don't we go have a talk so you can calm down?" And before he could answer, he whisked him away, up to his laboratory. I was left with Simon, "I'm sorry..." He said. I wiped the tears off my face, "why? There is nothing to be sorry for" I said "for Lewis's behavior, for all you went through, I'm just sorry" he said. We both stayed silent, I crumpled the cloth in my hand, then laid it flat on the table. "What's that?" He asked "it's a piece of purple cloth, my mother used to fiddle with it when she was stressed, scared, nervous, happy..." I trailed off, it would get awkward if I started to list every possible emotion. Thankfully Simon didn't ask about my mom, I don't think I could have handled the question just then. Suddenly we heard a shout followed by a crash. I was up immediately, I flew up to Duncan's lab level, Duncan stood there holding Lewis's lifeless body. "Duncan" I breathed "what did you do?" I asked scared. "Nothing, he attacked me, I just put him out with some anesthesia, he will wake up soon." With that he put Lewis on the lab table with a thump, "lets go Kira, it's wont be safe when Lewis wakes up." I looked at Simon who stood in the doorway watching the whole thing, "bye..." I said before I flew out. "Bye" I heard him reply.
Authors note- so as you can see, Lewis is just raging, I needed someone to just feel blind hatred towards Kira and I felt like Lewis would be perfect, because I need Rythian for something else later on in the plot. (Shouldn't have shared this info with you but...now you have something to look forward to!) please share if you like the story so far, so I know whether to continue writing it or not ~Brisingr
