Ambrose's POV

"Mr. Linton," I knocked on the door to Lilly's room and stood there for a few seconds, waiting for her to answer.

When I heard no response, I assumed she must have wanted to ignore me and started walking away. I needed to go into town to buy some food, and I was going to ask her if she would like to come along. Though she could be bothersome, a small part of me had to give in and accept that I enjoyed her company, no matter how little I showed it. And, I also figured that she might do something irrational if she came out of her room and saw that I was gone. Slightly relieved that she did not answer to my knock, I picked up my cane and coat, ready to head out on my own. I had told Karim he did not need to accompany me since there were no dangers for me buying food in this small village.

"Mr. Ambrose?" I heard Lilly's voice call out my name as soon as I reached the front door of the cabin.

I turned around and she stood right outside her door, a wondering look on her face. Why did she have to hear my knock!

I coughed slightly into my fist, "Mr. Linton, will you accompany me into town to buy some food?"

Her face broke out in a huge smirk and I immediately regretted asking her.

"Why of course I will, sir. Will Karim be joining us?"

"Not this time. There are no major threats to me while getting food."

Lilly turned back into her room and emerged out of it with her coat in her hand and a smile on her face.

"Let us go then, sir."

As we got to the carriage outside, I reminded myself that I could not hold my hand out to help her up into it like I had tried to do earlier. I'm sure she didn't notice. While I knew she was perfectly female in my head, I also was aware that she was dressed as a man and under the pretense of being a man while under my employ. However, I did sometimes slip up.

"Uh, sir, are you just going to stand there staring off at nothing?" Lilly looked down at me quizzically from inside the carriage.

I shook my head and ignored my thoughts as I climbed into the carriage and sat across from her.

The ride into town was fairly short, not taking more than ten minutes. Lilly was silent the whole time which at first was refreshing, but after a few minutes I couldn't help but want to hear her talk.

"Well, it is your fault for constantly telling her to be quiet," My inner voice told me.

I fought the urge to tell him that I hadn't asked him.

"We're here!" Lilly exclaimed.

Why was she so excited? We were only buying fruits and vegetables. Actually, the more I thought about it, she didn't really sound excited. I guess normal people typically sounded happy and full of emotion, unlike me.

After paying for a basket and giving it to her to hold, I led Lilly towards the vegetables.

"Are you planning on making broth, Mr. Ambrose?" She asked as I placed some herbs and potatoes into the basket.

"Yes." I replied sharply.

"I didn't think you were the type to cook. I'm sure you have someone to do that for you. You have more than enough money."

"But, why would I waste money on something I could do myself?"

"Well, why would you waste time on something someone could do for you?"
