author's note: this is installment number two of our rendition of what would happen if Lilly and Ambrose met as just a man and a woman. this takes place right after the chapter "An Alternate Beginning" so make sure you read that before reading this! this was written by me and little__ifrit so make sure to read her S&S fanfic as well! we understand the personalities of the characters don't match up perfectly to the original story but that's because we aren't RobThier and this is meant to be an alternate (and cuter) reality! we hope you enjoy this because we loved writing it! and as always characters and main story line belong to RobThier.

An Alternate Engagement

Lilly's POV

Today was the day. I hurriedly tried to tie my corset, and glanced in the mirror. Today was the day I would see my betrothed, Mr. Ambrose, for the first time since the ball. The ball where I met my future husband and his nemesis. I shivered, there was so much horror in the world I had yet to learn, so much I still didn't know.

Will I be able to cope with the life Mr. Ambrose lead? Will I be strong enough to--

"Lillian, my love. Come down at once, my dear. My... your rich fiancé will be here any moment my darling."

Pulled out of my thoughts by my aunts shrill voice, I silently cursed. I hadn't even managed tie my corset yet, let alone put on my dress, or comb my hair. Normally, I wouldn't care too much about those things, but the fact that I would be introducing Mr. Ambrose to my whole family made me want to look nice.

"I'll be there in a minute," I called, stumbling around the room, trying to finish getting ready.

Finally, I managed to put my dress on and walk to my vanity near the window to retrieve my brush. Looking out the window, I saw a small black chaise pull up to the house. It was simple, sturdy and made to last. Somehow, I knew that it belonged to him, and strange as it was, I found I wasn't even disappointed at his simplicity. In fact, it was quite refreshing, since I hated the preened and proper look that most aristocrats bore.

I looked over myself quickly in the mirror, taking in my shoulder length hair and light blue dress and smiled, I wasn't vain, no, that was Maria. But, even I could acknowledge the way the dress complimented my figure, and there was a happy shine in my eyes that came from being excited. He was finally here. Getting excited over a man was so unlike me, but for some reason Mr. Ambrose gave me the feeling that something was fluttering inside my stomach. Maybe something with wings, kind of like a butterfly.

Running...okay practically flying down the stairs, I passed my sisters and aunt, who tried scowling at me for running, but smiled instead. Apparently being excited about a suitor was okay in her book. Racing past them I stopped suddenly, seeing my uncle sitting in one of the parlor chairs.

I was shocked to put it simply. I could honestly say, in all my life, I'd never seen him in that particular spot. Or even in the house long enough to sit down. No wonder my aunt was in such a jovial mood. I tried to calm my breathing, I was filled with nervous energy, waiting for him to knock the door. My heart raced in anticipation as my family slowly trickled into the parlor. I hoped they would act relatively normal today. But then, when did they ever?

Hearing a knock sound at the door, my uncle stood up and walked to open the door. I mentally prepared myself for the long and harrowing conversation that was sure to come. The door opened, revealing a handsome, dark-haired gentleman with striking blue eyes. I smiled, he was here.
