Lilly's POV
Grrgh. Grrgh. Grrgh.
That was the continuous grumbling sound my stomach was making as I sat waiting for dead of night to come. The voices I heard bustling outside gradually came to a soft murmur and eventually complete silence. I knew it must be late now - maybe around midnight or later- and I was trying to count how many hours it had been since Croonie had came to tell me the plan.
"And tell you about how she was kissing Ambrose," my inner voice reminded me.
I shook the thought out of my brain. I knew exactly why he had done it, so it didn't matter anymore. It shouldn't matter anymore. Yet, for some reason the thought kept swirling through my head, as if he had betrayed me in some small way. Which, of course, was entirely silly since he hadn't given me some sort of oath that he would not kiss another woman. I suppose I had just hoped he'd reserve any kissing for me.
Pushing those thoughts to the very back of my mind, I focused on trying to ignore my looming hunger and preparing myself to be ready to go once Croonie came back. Like I had told her, I would be ready.
Ambrose's POV
"Okay, we have just a minute or two to go meet Lilly," Croonie said as she quietly creeped into my small room.
"You already took her to the meeting spot?" I asked.
"I took her to the outhouse, but I told her where the meeting spot was, so unless she's an idiot she should make it there!"
I felt my eyes narrow, not sure why Croonie thought she could have this type of attitude with me. She reminded me of the way Lilly acted.
"Then let's hurry up and go. We still have to get my driver and bodyguard, remember?"
"How could I forget, dear? They'll be meeting us there as well." She replied, batting her lashes at me.
Walking towards the wooden door, she pushed it open slowly and stuck her head out, looking left and right. Deciding that the coast was clear, apparently, she motioned for me to follow behind her. Making sure our footsteps were as soft as possible, we walked to the left of the camp, towards our meeting spot with Lilly. As we got out of the clearing and started entering the dense trees of the forest, I spotted Lilly's small outline in the dark. I felt my heart constrict with relief. Next to her were Karim and our driver.
"I see you all made it," Croonie said as soon as we got up to them.
"Yes, we're very capable," Lilly shot back.
"Keep your voices down," I hissed at them, "We need to get moving soon, before they notice we are all missing."
"Croonie, you aren't bringing anything with you?" Lilly asked.
At the same time Karim asked, "Sahib, what about our belongings?"
I glared at both of them, "Don't worry about that. We just need to focus on getting back to London."
Croonie spoke up, "There's a small town called Coalshire about twenty kilometers south of here. Walking through the woods for ten kilometers will take us to the edge of the forest. Then it's tenmore kilometers on some hilly terrain till we see the town tucked in between two hills."
"So the plan is we split up for the ten kilometers to make it out of the woods. They may find us to be missing soon, so it's better if we're not all together if they come searching," I explained.
"Seems like you two really have it all figured out," Lilly said.
For some reason I detected an annoyance in her voice and I did not know why. Shouldn't she be happy we were escaping?
