Apple Scene from chapter three - part two
By: aubie99

Ambrose's POV

"LILLIAN! Never run off in the carriage without me again!" I exclaimed.

"But I won the competition!" she said with a pout on her lips "and did you just call me by my first name? my very feminine first name?"

"That is beside the point Mr. Linton! Never do that again!" I said. I couldn't believe I had let her first name slip out.

"Think what you like sir, but either way I came home in the carriage and you did not."

My mouth pressed into a hard line. why did she insist on being so infuriating? "that is because you got to the carriage first."

"Then I won a race too!" she exclaimed excitedly.

"No, because I had no prior knowledge of such a race." I stepped closer to her, closing the distance between us in two easy strides, pinning her against the counter.

"Doesn't mean I didn't win Rick." She replied and I could see a slight blush color her sun tanned cheeks as her soft pink lips curved upward in a witty smirk.

"As you say, you ifrit. I pity the man who gets stuck with you." I let slide before I knew what I was saying.

"And who says I will be stuck with a man? Who says I will ever get married?" she asked, a sudden frown appearing on her face.

"who says you won't?" I asked back.

"I do! I don't need any man telling me what to do!" she exclaimed with fire in her eyes.

"but what if a man didn't want to tell you what to do and treated you as an equal?" I asked out of curiosity.

"HA! And where would I find such a man?" she asked lighting the same eyes that were just filled with fire with mirth.

"You would be amazed. For what you know, there could be one right in front of you!" I said as I unconsciously leaned in closer to her.

"What, are you suggesting yourself?" she asked, the same humor in her eyes.

"And what if I were? After all, have I not treated you as such since you have been in my employ?" I asked her, knowing I was pushing my boundaries.

"As a matter of fact, you have not!" she exclaimed "you have assumed I could not do a large number of things simply because I am a woman!"

"That is where you are wrong Lillian. I have assumed you wouldn't be able to complete certain tasks because many men whom I have asked to complete them have failed." I stated truthfully.

"oh." She replied looking down "so all this time you have been really treating me as an equal?"

"Yes, yes I have been." I admitted even though in reality I had asked much more from her than I would have from any regular employee.

"So what is it that you are suggesting exactly Mr. Ambrose?" she asked then, looking up at me with her dark doe eyes.

"I'm not suggesting anything. unless that is..... if you want me to." I said more hopefully than I wished.

"Well, what if I.... did?" she asked leaning ever so closely so that our faces were mere centimeters away from each other.

"Well then I guess I would have to ask you to marry me. But I wouldn't take all the time to announce it at a ball, and I certainly wouldn't waste money on a large wedding!" I replied truthfully.

"And if you were to do that, I would be glad because I don't need any of that typical female stuff. If I had it my way, the only people that would go would be my fellow feminist friends and my aunt so that she could see it with her own eyes and then leave me alone."

"if that were the case, I would be very pleased because it would be brief and cheap." I replied thinking about where the conversation was headed.

"that would be excellent, wouldn't it!" she said excitedly, a smile bringing up the corners of her lips which made my thoughts turn to the kiss at the end of the wedding, and what it would be like to kiss her lips again, and before I knew it, I was doing just that.

Her lips were just as soft and warm as they had been before, and they still had the sweet taste of the red apple she had been eating. We both melted into the bliss that was our kiss, and I couldn't help but come to the realization that I had to voice to her.

As the kiss ended, I gave her a bit of distance, and knelt to the ground in front of her "Lillian Linton, would you stay by my side until the end? Would you be my partner in crime and insane adventures? Would you indulge me in our pointless arguments until the day we die? Would you be my equal forever, and grant me the honor of being my wife?"

"hmmmmm on one condition." She said grinning "if you promise to let me keep my job-"

"of course!" I said automatically. I couldn't do it without her anymore.

"I wasn't finished Rikky." She said "if you will allow me to keep my job and do it dressed as a woman so that everyone can know that I have a job!" she said as I stood back up.

"is that your one condition?" I asked her.

"well, as long as you don't make me stick to normal women stuff and keep me stuck in a house all day. Then yes." She replied.

"fine." I said with a smile, and pulled her close for one more kiss.

author's note: hers is one of my favorites for sure, i was so surprised with everything that was happening.
