Chapter 3
The Sheriff’s men! The man I had robbed from had gone to the Sheriff! I ran dodging arrows staying hidden behind the hulky boys. I ran to the cave and changed into another disguise. I wore a green tunic once again with a hood. I dashed from the cave with my bow and knife handy.A man came charging at me. I drew my knife when another boy blocked me. I was quickly surrounded by 5 boys. They were trying to protect me. I just barely saw Robin running from the Sheriff who was mounted on a pure white stallion, there was no way he would get away. None of the boys seemed to realize their leader was in danger. I had an idea. I ran out between 2 of the boys, they tried to grab me but missed. They quickly drew back from being attacked. They couldn’t reach me and were being surrounded. I ran to Robin and yelled, “Little John go to the left.” Robin caught on and answered in a different voice, “Good idea Tyler.” Tyler really? “Run!” I yelled pushing Robin to the side. I ran in front of the sheriff rearing his horse. I taunted him by saying, “I’m Robin’s new recruit nice to meet you.” I ran backwards facing the Sheriff easily making him angry. He then smiled and pulled his horse into command. “Get that boy.” He said pointing at me. Ha catch me if you can. I materialized into the trees and started climbing. I jumped tree from tree dodging feathered arrows and thrown daggers. I felt someone grab my leg and pull me down. It was a young boy that I recognized as the Sheriff’s son Rodney. I tried to get my foot from his grasp but he held tight. “Let go idiot!” I shouted as loud as possible. He smiled and started to pull me down. He climbed down pulling me with him. He threw me over my shoulder and pulled me through the throngs of fighting. A lot of men were on the ground in pools of blood. I cringed slightly and saw Rodney smirking at me. He obviously didn’t recognize me. I almost smiled but remembered what was happening. I frowned and started struggling again. He finally reached the Sheriff and I saw him smirking. I smiled back at the smirk and his smirk wavered. I smiled even bigger and whistled. It was a whistle that Robin knows well from when we were younger, it was the whistle we had learned for playing find the flag. You could get captured and put in jail and someone would tap you to free you. I saw Robin pause from fighting and look my way. I winked at him and kicked Rodney. I did a back flip almost landing on recoiled Rodney. I ran to Robin and I could tell even though he had a hood on he was surprised. I started whistling a song that the Merry Men would remember. It was the song we used when someone got the flag so we would retreat from the other side to our own. Most of them recognized and ran. Others caught on and I tried to signal retreat. The Sheriff was looking at me with more hate then when he had looked at Robin with. I smiled and ran to the front of every one. I hid them in different places slowly dispersing them till only Robin and I were left we ran to the cave and I gave him a shawl and cane he looked like grandma. I stifled a laugh as he glared at me. I grabbed a dress and went farther into the cave hiding behind a rock and changing into the clothes. I then hid my boy’s clothes and ran to meet Robin who was waiting at the front of the cave. We walked out and looked like a regular girl helping an elderly woman through the woods. I saw the Sheriff and Rodney riding forward. They looked at us and stopped. Rodney smiled at me and I rolled my eyes. “Ah, Celeste have you seen any brutes running by, by any chance?” Rodney as he smiled at me. “No Rodney.” I said. I hated him, he was always flirting with me it was annoying. I finally got to kick him earlier though, yes! “Who is that?” said Rodney shaking off the coldness I had answered his question with. “I don’t know all I know is she needed help getting through the forest and I know this forest like the back of my hand.” I answered in a surprisingly smooth voice. “Okay.” Rodney said looking at me one last time before riding off. I looked at Robin and burst out laughing once they were out of hearing and seeing range. Robin threw off the shawl and glared at me. Then he burst out laughing. I quickly collected myself as the rest of the Merry Men came from their hiding spots. I had another idea, “Hey Robin, now can I join the Merry Men?” I asked in front of everyone. Some looked in confusion when I said again. I smiled and Robin immediately had a solemn face. “No.” he said simply like he had done before, “Just because you saved me and my Merry Men doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous for you.” I glared at him and yet another idea sprang up in my head. I would definitely continue thieving from Robin and live in the forest. I will be the Shadow. I will steal from the rich (at least most of them) and give them to doctors to find the cure for various diseases, not to mention the needy. Sure Robin already did that but they kept a portion of it to feed his men, I on the other hand will give away all of it. Something in Little John’s head seemed to click, “So that’s the urgent business you needed to talk to Robin about. If I was Robin I would have said the same thing. But now I know you can take care of yourself, though you may need a little help, I would say yes this second time.” John said matter of factually. I smiled at Robin as I heard murmurs of agreement. He looked angry at his men and roared, “I made up my mind and I’m not changing it.” I smiled at him and said, “That’s what you think, for now. Soon you will wish you had agreed like your smart men.” I pushed through his men and climbed the nearest tree and jumped away to hear a few worried murmurs. Plan A was going to better then I hooped it would be.
