I slammed my car door shut and mounted the porch steps to Wilburs' front door. Knocking a few times I waited patiently for the door to open. When it did an elegant woman in her sixties stared at me with slightly buldged eyes.
"Macey?" She asked in shock. I smiled broadly and nodded my head in agreement. Ms Shara Monroe extended her arms and quickly enveloped me in a tight hug.
"Hello Ms Shara, it's been such a long time, you look great." I complimented her when we pulled back. Shara smiled and waved the compliment away.
"Oh no, you're the one who looks great. My, you have really grown into a beautiful woman, Macey." Shara said as she led me into Wilburs house. I blushed lightly and said a soft thank you.
We entered the living room and were met by Wilbur and his father William. I hugged William and Wilbur and exchanged the mundane conversation as we walked through the house to the backyard.
I sat down on an comfortable arm chair and was quickly joined by Shara as she claimed the opposite one.
"So Macey, how's your parents?" Shara asked as she pinned me with a pointed stare.
"Uh...well the last time I heard of them they were having a vacation in Ireland. They didn't even come to grandads funeral, used the excuse that their trip couldn't be delayed." I answered grudgingly. Shara smiled sadly and looked to were the men were starting the fire.
"Are you happy Macey?" The abrubt question made me stop thinking for a second and fidgit with the hem of my dress.
It is such a simple question...
So why do I feel so insecure about my answer.
"I'm trying to be happy, but it's hard sometimes. The semi-empty ranch, the rotting house, the fact that my family are basically all gone, it gets to me somedays, but luckily I have Thundercloud there to liven the place up. He keeps me happy, for now atleast." I whispered out while avoiding Sharas' eyes. I heard her shift in her seat and sigh sympathetically.
"Don't be so hard on yourself, and don't you dare say your family is gone. You have us and we are your family now, accept that." Shara stated firmly as she folded her hands together. Her words had me at the edge of tears and I had to violently battle against the threating waterfall.
Wilbur chose that moment to walk towards us and hold out his hand for me.
"Would you like to go for a walk around the ranch with me?" He asked gently while holding my hand firmly. I smiled politely at him and nodded my head slowly. As I got up Wilbur kept hold of my hand and led me away from his backyard and parents.
We walked slowly down the dirtpath towards the barn. As Wilbur pushed open the huge barn door whinnies and snorts greeted us.
I gasped loudly when the horses started poking their heads out of their doors to look at us. Their colors ranged from sleek black to every coat color available, to shiny pure white. They were all gorgouse.
"Oh wow, I've never seen so many horses together." I breathed as I walked over to a dark bay, the name plate beside it's stable informed me that it's a gelding and he was named Blisters.
"Blisters? Now why on earth would someone call him Blisters?" I asked in confusion while turning to face Wilbur. Wilbur snickered as he came walking over to us. He rubbed Blisters head before turning towards me.
"He's a ex-champion racehorse, they all have these weird names." Wilbur answered my question while walking down the aisle towards another horse. The cream colored horse nuzzled Wilbur then lazily nipped at his shirt.
"This here is May, I named her after you. She was born on the day you left for New York, so I saw it fitting. And not to mention she's a blonde, just like you." Wilbur chuckled as he rubbed May's forelock. Knowing he named one of his horses after me caused a deep blush to spread across my face.
"Oh, well I'm flattered. Maybe I should name the next horse that comes to my ranch Monroe, then we're even." I joked as I stepped up next to Wilbur to rub Mays head. Wilbur replied with a chuckle then grabbed my hand and led me out of the barn.
We walked around the ranch in silence as we took in the beauty of the hills that were basked in moonlight.
"You know I wasn't joking when I told you I missed you right?" Wilbur suddenly spoke up. My eyes snapped up to meet his and I saw the sincerity that shown out of his dark grey eyes.
"Yeah I know, and I also meant when I said I missed you." I replied honestly. Wilbur suddenly pulled us to a stop and turned me around to face him. He looked down at me and a strange longing expression took hold of his face.
"Why did you push me away when I kissed you?" The question caught me by surprise and I took in a loud, gasping lungfull of air. My brain was silent and my heart was beating a mile a minute.
Why did I push him away?
Maybe because we are friends and I didn't want our friendship ruined if we didn't work out, or maybe because I was scared that he was going to end up doing the same thing to me Sam did.
I have never in my life saw Wilbur with the same girl twice, he wasn't the commitment kind of guy, and not to mention he was wild, probably more wild than Thundercloud was when he first saw Wilbur.
I know my heart is fragile, I don't know how much it can take to completly break, but I knew if Wilbur pulls the same thing on me Sam did, I wasn't going to recover.
And how much of a broken girl can Thunder handle, before he gives up on me. I can't become weak, Thunder needs me to be strong, he needs me to function normally so I can save the ranch and keep him with me.
My brain was still going haywire about all the reasons, when I suddenly felt Wilburs warm lips smash onto mine. The second his lips touched me all thoughts vanished and I couldn't help but respond.
This is going to get me into a lot of trouble.
