I woke up and the sun was bright. I was squinting, the tears now dry on my face. I heard the door open and a man came in with something in his hand. He made me stand and hit me with it. I realized that it was a whip that he was using to hit me. I let it happen. I said nothing, even though it stung. I had already felt worse pain when Shan got killed. When he left, I couldn't move without it hurting. Why can't everything be like it used to? I wondered. Shan would still be alive, I wouldn't be in this mess in the first place, and Mama, Baba, and Waipo wouldn't be scared half to death. I started to feel tears run down my face. Slowly at first, but then I embraced it and let it run at full speed. I heard a man's voice down the hall. Or was it a man? In fact, the voice sounded like an older boy. And it sounded very familiar.
But, my thoughts got cut off by the sound of that oh-so familiar voice start to yell. At the guards. This can't be good. I thought as I saw the red uniforms pulling that boy across the hall. "Li!" I heard him scream as his voice started to get more distant. No, it can't be. "Cheng?" there was no response. "Cheng?!" I started to get louder. But still, no answer. "CHENG!" I yelled, pulling on the chains wrapped around my wrists. It hurt so much, but I kept pulling, trying to reach the iron gate that was blocking me from the hall. "Why?!." I yelled into the hall. "Why does this kind of stuff always happen to me?" I asked myself as I kept yanking at the chains. The red guard ran to the gate as my eyes got wide. I slowly backed away, staring at the man with pleading eyes. He almost opened the gate, when he left my gaze and looked onward down the hall, walking away without looking at me.
I looked out of the small window that was in the room I was in when the iron gate opened and I heard a raspy voice. I looked up, preparing for what I saw. It was exactly who I thought it was. "Well, look who it is!" she exclaimed, cackling after she spoke. "I see they finally caught you." I retorted, staring at her with my as like slits. She got chained as the man walked out of the small room. She started to slowly crawl over toward me as I started to back away, hoping that I was out of her reach. "Where are you going?" she asked as I saw her reach for the end of my own chain. I grabbed onto bar I found on the wall and tucked in my legs so that it would be hard for her to pull me in. She started to tug on the chain, pulling hard. My hands were starting to slip, but I knew I couldn't let go. "Come... here." she said, grunting between words because she was pulling so hard. "Never." I called back, my hands starting to burn. I was starting to slip again, and the pain was becoming unbearable. I was starting to think about letting go. But I couldn't pull myself to let go and lose. Just because Shan went doesn't mean I have to. "HELP!" I screamed, aiming toward the gate. Just then, one of the red guard came to the gate and opened it immediately, pulling the woman back and pinning her up against the wall. Once she was far from me, I slid down the wall and fell on the floor. I curled up into a ball as the room started to get get dark. My hands stung but I didn't notice as I fell into a deep sleep.
