Sunpaw felt her paw sear with pain as she pressed weight against it. Redfur had told her that the paw would never heal properly, and Bramblestar just sat outside the medicine cat den repeating the word Cinderpelt over and over again. Sunpaw padded awkwardly outside, grimacing every few paw steps. Bramblestar looked up. "I'm glad you're still alive, Sunpaw," he whispered. A dark hazel tabby she-cat was sunbathing outside the warrior's den, her pelt gleaming beautifully. Sunpaw took only a glance at her and looked away. Falconpaw padded over to her. "Oh, do you know Briarpatch? She's my mother, Skypaw's too," she said. Sunpaw nodded her head and looked down at the chaffinch she was eating. "I lost my mother in a snowstorm," Sunpaw muttered. Falconpaw flattened her ears back, embarrassed. "Sorry. I didn't know," she said. Sunpaw looked at Falconpaw. "It's okay," she muttered. Falconpaw looked around and shook her fur. "I have to go, Sunpaw. I think Oceanstrike wants me," Falconpaw said. Sunpaw looked longingly at Falconpaw as the tabby left her outside the medicine cat den.

Littlefang padded into the medicine cat den with a bundle of herbs in her mouth. "Sunpaw, you alright?" she asked. Sunpaw nodded and looked at the herbs. "What are those for?" she asked. "Oh nothing," Littlefang muttered. Sunpaw twitched her ear, but decided that her mentor would tell her nothing now. Bramblestar leapt onto the highledge and called to all the cats, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join beneath the highledge for a clan meeting!" Sunpaw padded out of the medicine cat den and sat next to Falconpaw, her tail swishing over the ground. "As you know, Sunpaw hurt herself three moons ago on the Thunderpath, but she has healed now. Littlefang, do you believe that she has had enough training to be a warrior?" Bramblestar began. Littlefang nodded. "Do you, Oceanstrike, also believe that Falconpaw has trained hard enough to become a warrior?" Oceanstrike nodded sharply. Falconpaw wiggled a little bit in excitement. "Then, by the power of StarClan, I, Bramblestar, call my warrior ancestors to look down on these apprentices, for they have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code. Sunpaw and Falconpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, even at the cost of your life?" Sunpaw and Falconpaw nodded in unison. "Very well. Falconpaw, from this moment forward you will be known as Falconfur, in honor of your independence and courage. Sunpaw, you will be known as Sunblaze for your perseverance and faith. You will both sit vigil tonight at moonrise. That is all," Bramblestar declared, leaping off of the highledge. "I have one thing, Bramblestar," Littlefang mewed. Bramblestar looked at her and climbed back onto the highledge. "Yes?" he asked. Sunblaze pricked her ears. "I would like to become an elder," Littlefang said, her voice ringing. "An elder?" several cats meowed in astonishment. "Yes, an elder," Littlefang replied cooly. "Very well. You may join Heatherclaw and Firefur in the elder's den," Bramblestar said, leaping off the highledge. Sunblaze felt her heart break as the she-cat walked towards the elder's den. She's doesn't want to be a mentor again.... Because of me....
