As I walk into my house, I am greeted by the warmth of my home. I'm happy that today was the last day of school before Winter break, but I'm not excited about the few weeks of boredom that are ahead in the future. School sucks, but at least it gets me out of the house.
I know that nobody is home so I head straight for my bedroom. My parents are rarely home because they both work at super fancy offices and maintain well paid jobs. I can't complain though because my allowance is beyond decent.
After going into my room, I lay on my bed and listen to music while I stare at my ceiling. Apparently I fell asleep because about an hour later, I am awakened by a call from Mal, my best friend. I answer the phone and make a weird sound that was a cross between a yawn and a groan.
"Bro, I have a problem and I need your help," Mal says urgently. I'm actually very surprised that she's still awake at this time during the day because we both have a habit of sleeping soon after we get home.
"Ok, first of all, you are way too hype for this time in the afternoon," I respond. "Second of all, what is so urgent that you needed to wake me up?"
"My very important problem is...should I order Chinese food?"
And at that moment, my hand went to my forehead, but I still smiled. This is my best friend and honestly, I wouldn't trade her for anyone else even though she just woke me up to ask if she should order Chinese food.
"I mean, if you want, but get me something. I'll be there in 15- 20 minutes."
"Ok, bye loser," she says before hanging up.
Mal and I have an interesting friendship. We're not your basic pair of best friends. We're friends because we're both so evil and cruel. Also, we have that kind of amazing friendship where we can go from fangirling about our favorite band to venting about how bad we've been feeling lately. We're just there for eachother through it all.
After arriving at Mal's house, I enter through the back door and see her sitting at her dining room table and watching YouTube. We sit and fangirl over bands and occasionally rant about our beliefs and morals. When the food gets to her house, we sit and eat silently while we scroll through Instagram.
"Bro, let's play our favorite game," I say suddenly.
"What would you do if..?" Mal asks and I nod my head. This is a game where one of us give a scenario and the other has to say what they would do if it actually happened. We first started this fun game when we almost got run over in the street and I asked what she would do if I was actually hit by a car.
"Ok so what would you do if I had a one night stand in the future and then called you and said my period was late?" I ask. She thought for a second before responding.
"I would buy some pregnancy tests. Once we're pretty sure that you're pregnant, I'll ask you who the father is. Then I'll judge the father depending on his looks and decency. We'll tell your family so you can go to the doctor and then we'll contact the baby daddy," she says completely seriously.
"PLOT TWIST: I'm a whore and I don't know who the father is."
"Well then guess what pair of best friends are raising a baby together."
"That's very nice. I mean, I would hope that you would sit me down and yell at me if you see that I'm becoming that reckless, but thanks bro."
"Cool, I'll be sure to yell at you if that actually happens."
Soon after our little game ended, I got a call from my mother.
"Hey sweetie, your father's office is having a holiday party for the workers and their family and I think you should go," she says sweetly. I know that behind this sweet voice of hers, she's actually hoping that this conversation goes quick so she can go back to work.
"Um, why do you want me to go?" I ask, but only because I'm curious about what she'll say.
"I just want you to be somewhere besides school, home and Mal's house. I think that being in social situations with people besides the kids at your school will help you. I just want you to be that happy child that you used to be."
"You do realize that sending me to an office party isn't gonna make up for those appointments with the psychiatrist that you don't have time to take me to, right?" She sighs after I ask my question, but probably only because she realizes that the conversation is now longer than she hoped it would've been. "You know what mom? I'll go, but can Mal come with me?" I heard her go on about wanting me to talk to other people, but I was mostly paying attention to my best friend sitting across from me, whisper-yelling about wanting to stay home and sleep. "Never mind, mom. I'll go without Mal, but I probably won't socialize. Bye, see you...probably not anytime soon."
Great, so now I'm going to an office party without any company. On the bright side, I'm wearing leggings and an oversized My Chemical Romance hoodie with my hair tied into a high ponytail so I'm sure I'll blend in perfectly. (I'm really hoping you sensed the sarcasm in that).
This will be fun.
Author's Note: This is the second book that I'm posting here and I'm hoping this works out. The last book was put on hold due to circumstances that just made it really difficult to continue writing. This chapter sucks and nothing really happened, but it's just an introduction to Shay and Mal's friendship and it includes a little about her relationship with her mom. I'll be posting Chapter Two soon and uploads after that will be posted randomly until I have an actual schedule going.
