At the party, my father and I do not communicate at all, but I follow close behind him because I have no where else to go. That is until I see that the office kitchen consists of an Edible Arrangement and cookies. I go into the kitchen and after checking the fridge, I see that there is also a box of Caprisun which I'm assuming was bought for the kids at the party. I decide to take a Caprisun and a decent stick of fruit and I take a seat in the corner of the kitchen to scroll through my phone.
While sitting in my corner and minding my own business, I see a guy walk casually into the kitchen. I only see the back of him, but he's wearing a hoodie and skinny jeans so he obviously doesn't work at the office which leads me to think that he's the son of one of the workers. I'm intrigued by him, but mostly because I'm surprised to see that I'm not the only one here wearing a hoodie.
The guy, from what I can tell is about 18 or 19 years old, making him 1 or 2 years older than me. He has brown hair and I'm assuming he's 5'9 or 5'10. He first goes into the fridge and grabs a Caprisun and while turning around, his eyes lock with mine. He seems surprised to see me sitting there, but he gives me a smile and a very small head nod. Instead of politely returning the gesture, I quickly look away, but instead of looking back to my phone like a normal person would, I look up to the lights on the ceiling. I quickly glance at him and I see that he now has an awkward smile on his face and is avoiding eye contact as well. Great job Shay. You freaked him out with your weirdness.
I sit in silence with mystery guy across the room from me. Occasionally I can see him glance over to me, but I try to ignore him. After a few minutes, I decide to leave because I feel extremely awkward. As I get up and head toward the kitchen door to leave, I hear mystery guy speak.
"Wait, you don't need to leave," he said. I turned around to look at him. "I mean, obviously you came in here to avoid everything going on out there. I'm sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable. I can leave if you want me to."
I stood there completely mind blown. He spoke politely unlike the guys at my school and his voice was shaky as if he was nervous. I decided to take a few steps back towards my seat.
"You don't need to leave and you didn't make me feel uncomfortable," I say. I did feel uncomfortable, but I wouldn't say it was his fault. It's not his fault that I'm an anti-social loser with anxiety that acts up from just an attractive male making eye contact with me.
I decide to grab another stick of fruit because fruits are a million times better when they're an Edible Arrangement. I notice that mystery guy didn't take any fruit.
"Do you want one?" I ask him while gesturing to the arrangement. He nods.
"Thank you."
I take my previous seat and for a few seconds, mystery guy and I just stare at each other until I finally look away. I unlock my phone and decide to text Mal so that I look busy.
Queen Shay: So there's this guy here...
Queen Shay: I hope you don't mind, but I'm gonna send a bunch of pointless texts now.
Queen Shay: la da dee do la da
Queen Shay: na na na na na na
I know that she's sleeping so I don't expect a text back. When I look up from my phone, I see that he's still staring at me. I give a small smile so he won't feel bad about being caught staring at me.
"Um, hi," he said. I couldn't stop myself from smiling wider. He smiled as well, but he quickly looked to the floor. I decide to start a conversation with him. My anxiety is building up, but I'm willing to test it right now. There's something comforting about seeing that he feels just as awkward as I do.
