Chapter Four - Melody's POV

I feel my hair blow around my face in a wild mess of curls as the wind blows, the cold air nipping at my skin. With a sigh I leaned against my window frame, my arms crossed over my chest as I stared out at the forest behind my house. The trees sway in the wind and every now and again I can hear the faint howl from one of the wolves. The sound alone brings a smile onto my face, and I closed my eyes as I take in all in.

However, the calming sensation that I feel is shortly broken by my mother's voice.

"Melody, dinner's ready!"

I opened my eyes as she called me, a soft sigh of annoyance escaping between my parted lips. I quickly glanced over my shoulder to look at my door before returning my gaze back to the forest. "I'll be there soon." I promised quietly.

I turned away from my window, and head down the stairs, smiling warmly at my mother as I grabbed my plate from the counter and take a seat at the table. I placed my plate in front of me, and carelessly pick at it, cutting the meat into small pieces before shoving it into my mouth.

I chewed the tender meat slowly, glancing at my mother every now and again through the corners of my eyes. Eaten dinner in silence was quite normal for us, unless one of us had something to discuss.

Swallowing the meat, I briefly hesitated before speaking. "Oakley Lane High has apparently closed down. It was destroyed and vandalised." I told her, placing my form aside and resting my hands in my lap.

Mum looked up at me with newfound interest. "Really?"

"Yeah, Hazel and I ran into one of their students after school today." I added. "She seemed pretty nice."

"That's nice." She said as she placed a bit of food in my mouth. "Will they be attending Ridge Cliff High?"

I nodded. "According to the girl we met, yes. I'm pretty sure she said at least thirteen of them will be attending out school now."

Mum nodded her head slowly. "That's a lot of new kids." She mused, sounding a bit disinterested now.

I can't help but scowl at her sudden disinterested tone, but I knew that always seemed to be lost in her own thoughts around this time, so it was nothing new to me.

Shrugging off her disinterest, I picked up my fork again and take another mouthful of food, chewing slowly as I glanced towards the sliding door. I was almost tempted to abandon my dinner and sprint out the door and go into the forest.

With a soft sigh, I forced the thought from my mind. It is however, quickly replaced by another.

"Hazel and I played in front of a group of kids today." I told her, placing the fork back on the edge of the plate as I awaited her reaction.

Her eyes widened slightly as she took in my words, and one of the brightest smiles I've ever seen from her appears. "How did they react?" She beamed, leaning forward slightly to place one of her hands over mind. It was strangely odd to see her like this; acting like a school girl who continuously insisted on finding out about the latest gossip.

"They were all speechless." I told her smugly.

Mum chuckled, shaking her head slightly as she leaned back into her chair. "That's my girl, you show them what you're capable of."

We continued dinner; constantly bringing up new conversations all throughout the night. It surprisingly was one of the first times we have ever had dinner without sitting in complete silence. It made me feel slightly happier.
