Chapter 5

I threw my book bag on the couch and headed outside. I shifted into my wolf form and made my way to the treehouse. I walked a little ways, until I saw Drew's house. The windows were open and cardboard boxes were piled everywhere.

The girl named Alice I had met at school today was sitting against a pile of boxes. Alice must be Drew's sister or something, I thought to myself. I heard a car pull in the Carter's driveway and I bolted under the window. It wasn't my best choice, but there wasn't enough time to move. I heard the door slam, and I realized the window I was under was open.

Great.

I tried not to move a muscle as I heard a man's voice greet Alice. "How was school?" The voice said gruffly.

"It was fine. You know the next door neighbors? Their daughter goes to Copperfield," Alice said, her voice monotone.

"That's nice," I heard the male voice say.

A bush was poking me in the side, and I shifted my weight. My paw happened to find a small, sharp shard of glass sticking out of the ground. I yelped, and all conversation in the house stopped.

"Alice... Did you hear that?" The male voice asked.

"Sounded like a stray dog or something."

I held my breath. Go with that. I'm just a stray dog.

"No... I know that sound anywhere. It's a wolf," the man said, almost a little excitedly.

Crap.

"And it sounds close..."
I hear the man walk somewhere and I take that precious time to shake my paw and bolt out from under the window. I start for behind my house. There was a large gap between the two houses and I braced myself for running. I burst forward but I heard a man's voice shouting. I turn towards the sound and flatten my ears back. The man had a gun, pointed right at me.

There was a moment of silence, and it seemed like time stopped. Then I sped towards the forest. I heard a gunshot. He's shooting at me! I thought. There were one or two bullets that whistled past my ear before I felt a sharp pain cut into my side. I howled, falling to the ground. The last thing I saw before blacking out was the deep gash the bullet had made in my side.

I opened my eyes to Drew sitting next to me, and he held a wet washcloth the my side.

"Jade?" He asked quietly. I realized he had never seen my wolf form and I nodded my head.

Drew took off the washcloth and I peered at the wound. The bullet had only grazed my body. Drew silently pulled out some bandages and a bottle of clear liquid. He poured some of the liquid on his hands and gently smeared it over the wound. It burned. A lot. I winced, but after a moment the pain melted away and Drew wrapped the bandage around my side. I stood up shakily.

I found the strength to shift to my human form and then I stare at Drew.

"What happened? Who did that to you?" Drew asked, looking up at me, concern in his eyes.

I couldn't get the image of the man with the gun out of my head. "Your father..." I say, barely audible.

Drew stands up. "What?" He asks softly.

"Your father," I say louder this time.

I turn away from Drew and run to my house, flinging myself on the couch, curling myself into a ball. Guns have always scared me. But I didn't understand why the man wanted to shoot me in the first place.

What did I do wrong?
