I woke up and flopped over to look at my phone. The time said 10:00 am. I looked at my screensaver. It was a picture of me and Fletcher when we were sixteen. I sighed, remembering last night.
I sat there in silence for a while, my hands clasped, looking at my screensaver until the screen darkened, automatically turning off.
I stood up, hearing something outside. I walked over to my window and to my surprise, there was a large moving truck, unlike the one that Fletcher had used. The Cage's had already moved their furniture to their new house, they just had to drive there.
I threw on my mint green robe and walked down the stairs into the living room. My dad was sitting in his red leather armchair, reading the day's paper and sipping his coffee. My mom was making breakfast.
I walked into the kitchen and slumped on one of the bar stools."Toast, Jade?" Mom offered me a plate, smiling.
I shook my head no. "What's going on outside?" I asked, gesturing to the noise outside our front door.
Mom's smile faltered. "They're the new neighbors."
"This soon?"
"Yep."
I sighed again. "I'm going for a walk."
I kissed my mother on the cheek and walked upstairs.I quickly threw on some sweatpants and my green sweatshirt. I threw my hair into a messy pony tail and put on my running shoes.
After this I went out the front door and looked at the chaos laying before my eyes.A woman was arguing loudly with one of the mover men, and a tall man was hauling a love seat up to Fletcher's house. Well, not Fletcher's house anymore. There was furniture sprawled all over the front lawn, and the mover truck was stationed in the middle of the cul-de-sac.
I tried to ignore her as the woman started yelling at the mover guy as I jogged away from the scene, into the forest. I walked like this for a while until I shifted into my wolf form. My wolf was an agile, brown wolf that matched my hair color almost perfectly, with intense green eyes.
I wanted to go to the tree house, I decided. I walked a little says until I saw the ladder. I squinted. Was the lantern still on? I thought Fletcher turned it off last night. I walked slowly up until I came to the ladder, then shifted back. I walked up slowly, gripping at the sturdy oak wood.
I swung open the door. To my surprise, a handsome guy with sandy blond hair was looking around the treehouse. At the noise of the door, the guy turned around, startled. He looked about my age, and his eyes...
I froze. The second my green eyes met his chocolate brown ones, something clicked. Deep inside me, my wolf was howling. This boy was my mate. I could feel the bond tied between us. Judging from the look on his face, he could tell as well.
"I-" he started saying.
Suddenly I remembered he was in my tree house. "What are you doing in here?" I asked, a touch of anger in my voice. Only me and Fletcher came in here together. Not this... Boy."I'm sorry, I was just looking around the place, I was walking in the forest and I- I came across your treehouse, and I'm new to the neighborhood, and-"
I stopped him. "You're my new neighbor."
He nodded slowly. "Look, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have come up here, it isn't my property, it won't happen again, I promise." Before I could say anything, he slipped behind me and raced down the ladder. I watched as he ran off towards his house.
Mixed emotions swirled in my mind and I sat down in the corner Fletcher and I had sat in the night before. I thought back to the guy. My mate. This was crazy. He was my new neighbor? Absolutely crazy. I had thought about meeting my mate someday, something romantic would happen, but no, I found him breaking into my treehouse.
I wanted to like him. He was handsome, had beautiful dark brown eyes, and sandy hair. But when you find someone breaking into the place you spent almost everyday with your best friend, things get complicated.
I put out the lantern he had turned on and stood up. I made my way down the ladder into the crisp leaves below.
I shifted quickly and sprinted back to my house. When I got there I burst inside, and ran up the stairs to my room. I looked at my phone suddenly. What about Fletcher? What would I tell him? That my mate had replaced him and broke into our treehouse? I sighed. It was Sunday, and I wasn't really looking forward to going back to school. Especially without Fletcher. I had friends, of course, but nobody like Fletcher. My thoughts wandered back to my mate. I never even got his name. I wonder if he's going to the same school I'm going to...
