I walked into school with Andrew, and after a moment a pretty girl with long blond hair approached him. "Drew! I had to get a ride from Stephanie today! Where were you? I saw your car in the drive-" as if just noticing me the girl faced me. "Who's she?" The girl asked Andrew, putting her hands on her hips, her lips pursed.

"Alice, this is the new neighbor, Jade," Andrew said.

The girl named Alice stared at me. "Nice to meet you," she mumbled. Facing Andrew again she said, "I have go, talk later?"
Andrew gave her a nod and Alice planted a kiss on Andrew's cheek and ran off.

Great. So Andrew had a girlfriend.

Andrew faced me. "So... Can we all now?" He asked impatiently.

"About what?"

"Well..." Andrew pulled me aside and said in a hushed voice.
"This can't be right. We can't be mates, it's not possible."

I blinked. "What do you mean?" Did this have something to do with Alice?

"Look, I understand that you're.. A werewolf. But listen..."

"I understand that you're a werewolf as well. What's your point?" I asked.

Suddenly the bell rang. "Sorry, Andrew, I'm going to be late for Literature if I don't start walking." Literature was halfway across the school.

Andrew ran his fingers through his hair. "First of all, don't call me Andrew. It's Drew. And second of all, this is really important..."

I sighed. "Well, what's your first class?"

"Calculus."

"Calculus is near Lit. You can tell me along the way," I said.

Drew sighed as we started walking. "Look, we can't be mates because I'm not a werewolf," he said.

I stopped.

"What?" This explained how he had no wolf scent on him. "You're not?"

He shook his head. "Nope."

I stared at him. "That's crazy."

"I know."

Sooner than expected we were at Calculus. "We'll talk later," I said.

He looked like he wanted to object but he nodded and slid into the Calculus classroom.
I made my way down the hall to Lit.

After two more classes it was time for lunch. I sat with my friend Bianca and ate my sandwich slowly.
"So you're sure that's what he said?" Bianca asked me again. I rolled my eyes at her. "Yes, I'm sure."

I eyed Drew across the cafeteria. He was looking around, his lunch tray in his hands. He then proceeded to make his way outside. It was almost winter, and he was eating outside?

I finished up the last of my sandwich and stood up. "I'll see you later," I say to Bianca.

I stand up and make my way to the doors at the back of the cafeteria and slip out into the cool November air. I spot Drew sitting under a tree, reading a book. I walk up to him.

"Mind if I join you?" I ask.

He looked up. "Go right ahead."

I sat down next to him. "What are you reading?"

"Romeo and Juliet," he says as the tips of his ears redden.

"Interesting," I state.

Suddenly Drew closed his book and stared at me. "Back to the situation of 'us' being impossible.

It wasn't 'us' that was impossible. It was the whole mate thing.

I stayed silent.
"Nobody in my family is a werewolf. This cannot be right..." Drew muttered under his breath.

"What's so bad about it?" I asked quietly.

Drew must have not heard me because he kept muttering things about the moon and something else that wasn't intelligible.

I stood up. "See you," I said, annoyed.

"Wait!" Drew said, but I already started walking across the campus lawn. I walked inside and sat down by Bianca. "All he cares about is science and logic," I mumble.

Bianca laughs. "He'll come through some day. Boys are just kind of like that sometimes. They look for reasons to not love someone."

I stare at her.
"Was that the wrong thing to say?" She asks.

"Kind of," I reply.

Bianca groans. "Sorry!" She checks the watch on her wrist and sighs. "I'll have to catch you later, I promised Zandri I would help her with something."

"Bye." I had chemistry next, and I gathered my belongings. I walk to the Chem Lab left of the cafeteria. I sit down the empty table assigned to me and look around. Almost everyone had a partner already, and there was one person still not here. I watch as the Chem Lab door flies open and Drew comes in. I groan inwardly. Please say he is not my lab partner.

Drew mutters an apology to Ms. Lilac, our Chem teacher, and sits down next to me, looking in front of him. It was as if he had not even noticed I was there.

Ms. Lilac walked to the front of the classroom and spoke. "Welcome to Chemistry. I would like you each to take a moment to introduce yourselves to your lab partner that you will have until next semester." I sighed and turned to Drew. He was huddled over his desk, writing something. I cleared my throat. He turned to me, hand outstretched, his mouth open as if about to say something.

"Jade Noble," I say, shaking his hand.

"Drew Carter," he said, a lopsided grin on his face.

I shook my head and turned away from him to grab a pair of goggles, but a small smile played on my lips. This could be a fun year.
