The next day, with only a week of the holidays left, my Mum reminded me of a carnival that was happening. A road was closed down and there was supposed to be a lot of cool stalls and a few small kid rides there which she thought would be fun for Leah and I. After asking Leah if she could go, I also texted Lily and asked whether she wanted to go also.

With Lily meeting us there, I walked over to Leah's house which was fifteen minutes away. I could hear her and Liz arguing as I walked up to their door. Andrew answered.

"Thank god you're here," He said, letting me in.

"What's going on?"

"Leah is having trouble picking out an outfit, you know, girl stuff," He said, closing the door.

"Right well, I'll just wait down here with you here then," I said as I rocked on the backs of my heels,

"Oh no you don't son, go give Liz a hand in there," Andrew said shoving me towards the stairs.

I laughed and walked upstairs, the yelling becoming louder.

"Woah what happened in here?" I asked the three girls in Leah's room. Her floor and bed were covered in clothes, a mixture of boys and girls.

"Oh good, you're here. You get her into something," Alyssa, Leah's sister said, putting a Nike t-shirt into my hands and walking out the room.

Leah stood in front of me by her chest of drawers. She wore a white shirt with ' dream big' written onto it in cursive writing which was tucked into light blue jean shorts.

"Michael, don't you think Leah looks pretty in this," Liz asked, motioning her hands towards Leah, with a pleading look in her eyes.

"Honestly Leah, you look beautiful," I admitted, Leah blushing slightly as she looked down at the floor.

"What'll everyone else think though?" She whispered. I walked over to her and unhooked my sunglasses from my t-shirt,

"No one will even have to know that it's you," I said, placing my glasses on her face. She took another look in the mirror, before turning to me and smiling. I grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the door, hearing her mother let out a sigh of relief.

When we arrived at the carnival, we found Lily sitting on a fence.

"Sorry we're late," I said to Lily as Leah tried to hide herself behind me.

"Is that Luke?" Lily asked, trying to look around me,

"Come on Leah, it'll be fine." I comforted. She cautiously stepped forward and stood beside me before taking her glasses off of her face.

"It is you! Why are you dressed like a girl?" Lily asked. Leah looked around to see if anyone had taken an interest in our conversation before answering,

"I'm transgender, Lily."

"I fucking knew it!" Lily exclaimed and Leah and I exchanged a confused look,"My uncle is like you, he used to be my auntie. I had a feeling that you may have been like him, but I never wanted to say anything in case I offended you,"

"Just please don't tell anyone, I'm not ready yet,"

"I won't, I finally have a friend that's a girl though, this is great!" She said and I smiled, grateful that she wasn't disgusted or creeped out by Leah.

"My name is actually Leah out of school times, but if it gets too confusing, you can continue calling me Luke,"

"Leah, no it's alright, I got it. It suits you,"
