Being a mom

-Mom?
Clary looked over her shoulder. Baby Amy was there, looking at her with her big golden eyes. Her soft red hair was too short for her mom to do anything with them. She wished she could braid them. Clary smiled at her little angel.  It was a sad smile, but it was a smile. You have to understand, it was hard for her to be happy without Jace, the love of her life. She held back her impulse to break down and cry until she died, but she couldn't quite keep salty water from filling her eyes.
-Yes?
-When is dad coming back?
Clary felt a single tear streaming down her cheek.
-I don't know, Amy.
Jace had been gone for over a month now. No letters, no texts. Just one phone call.
"I'm sorry, Clary. But the war needs me. Please take care of the kids, okay? I will be back soon. But don't wait for me. Take care of them, and I will come back and we can finally be that happy family. I will come back to you, Amy and Stephen. Don't worry"
One phone call. That's it. For all Clary knew, Jace could be lying in a pool of his own blood right now. Clary clenched her jaw, hoping to fade the sob she let out.
Why did Jace go? The Clave had enough warriors, and Jace had done so much for them in the past... But all she could do was to wait for her husband to come home. Only... It was war. A big war. And all of that because of her father, Valentine.
Loyalists of his Circle wanted to destroy the world. Kill all the Downworlders. Destroy the Clave. They were at least a dozen. And they were powerful, and fearies had sided with them. But in the ashes of the old Council rose a new one. Werewolves, vampires, warlocks. And Shadowhunters.

Clary cleared her cheeks and turned around to hug Amy.
-But why did he go?
Clary could not answer. Her daughter didn't have to know everything. She was only a child. It would just make her sad.
-Why don't you go play with your brother Stephen? Or you can go see aunt Izzy. She is in the kitchen with Simon and  your cousin Maxwell.
-No, I don't want to go with them. I want to go see dad.
-Honey, you can't. He isn't here, but he will come back. Don't worry.
-I am not worried.
Clary couldn't help but smile. And that was a real smile. Her daughter though that she wasn't afraid of anything. That she couldn't be afraid. Just like Jace.
-I know. I know. But don't you want to see your cousin Max ?
-No, I don't.
-Ok. And you can go wherever you want. But stay in the Institute.
-Ok. I promise.
So, Clary went back to her work. She was working on a portal with Magnus, but he wasn't here at this moment. So Clary worked hard and alone.
