Three years ago
I remember when my brother, Johnnie, came out to me before he did to anyone else (besides his boyfriend). It was the same night he had gotten back from his friend's house.
"Kat?" He said softly as he knocked the door twice. "Come in," I called. "I wanted to talk to you about something," his voice cracked on the last word. "What's wrong?" He walked over to my bed and sat down on the edge. "I've been keeping a secret from everyone and I think it's time to tell you. . ." At this I sat up and put my phone down. I looked at him and I could tell he wanted to cry. He was scared.
"Did you get a girl pregnant?" I blurted out. "If you did, mom and dad are going to kill you," he simply shook his head. "No Kat, that's the thing. I can't get a girl pregnant because," he paused for a moment and took a deep breath. "Because I'm gay." He looked up to see my reaction, his bottom lip quivering.
"Does mom and dad know?"
"They don't and I'm scared to tell them. But I have to, my boyfriend keeps telling me that I should."
I looked up at him confused. "Wait a minute you already have a boyfriend?!" He nodded and cleared his throat. "His name is Xander. You know him, he came over a couple times." I sighed and held my index and middle finger to my temple.
"Johnnie, you need to tell them. I know it's killing you," I got up and grabbed his wrist, pulling him up. He had an icy look on his face, it felt like if I made direct eye contact with him for too long I'd freeze for all of eternity.
"Kat, please don't make me," he said, in a voice that made him seem so small. I'd never seen my big brother like this. He'd always been the brave and protective brother. The kind of boy who never seemed to be afraid of anyone or anything.
"You're going to whether you like it or not."
He shook his head and wiped his hand across his face, tears staining the sleeves of his oversized hoodie. "Johnnie, mom and dad are going to love you no matter what, it's not like they're going to kick you out of the house or something," as soon as I said those words I regretted them. The poor guy was already scared enough.
"Will you be there next to me? The whole time?" He finally looked up at me. I nodded my head and said, "Always, Johnnie."
And that's how he came out.

Today
Will offered to walk me to my class, so I accepted since I didn't know anyone else and we did have most of the same classes. We made it to the door of my homeroom, outside there were a lot of jocks throwing a football around. When they saw me, they dropped the ball and looked me up and down like a little kid would looking at giant chocolate cupcake. "Good luck, cutie," Will winked at me and walked away. Part of me wanted him to stay until a teacher came or something. Being the only girl in a group of perverted guys is a nightmare.
"Hey baby, what's your name?" One of the guys shouted from across the hall, I simply rolled my eyes and stood near the door. "No need to be quiet I just wanna know your name," he stood next to me and put his right arm on the wall. I turned to my left only to see a lot more other guys surrounding me. Great I'm cornered.
"Can you move?" I said in the most steady voice I could. "I can, I just don't want to, I'm helping my buddy Marcus over here," he turned to look at the guy behind me. I gasped as I felt a hand slide around my waist, pulling me back. The guy, Marcus, buried his face in my neck and whispered things I couldn't hear, and I didn't want to hear. I tried getting out of his hold but he was too strong, so instead I took advantage of the fact that he was behind me.
