Chapter 12
"If it's love,
And we decide that it's forever
No one else can do it better."
My head bobbed to the rhythm of the song as my own voice blared through the speakers of the control panel. Leaning back in the cushioned chair, I smiled to myself when I heard how smooth the edited parts sounded. It was awesome that I had Luke so I didn't sound like a complete idiot.
I gave Luke a sideways glance from my spot adjacent to him. His thin eyebrows were furrowed in concentration and his fingers hovered over the buttons and levers on the control panel. He was like some sort of magician with that thing, I swear.
When the final chords of the song blasted, Luke slouched in his chair, his lips curled in a small smile. He pressed a few more buttons before swiveling his chair around to face me. Bringing the tips of his fingers together, he stared at me for a few seconds with a poker face. I became self-conscious all of a sudden and brought my gaze down to my lap.
Awkward might as well be my middle name.
A rough hand clasped down on my shoulder, making me flinch. I sucked in a breath, my hand flying up to my heart.
"Geez, Luke, you scared me!" I whined, slapping his hand away (his wrist had way to many metal bracelets). Someone behind me erupted in laughter.
My head snapped up after I heard that, and to my surprise, Luke was still in his seat, his shoulders shaking from silent laughs. When my eyes met Luke's dark ones, he brought his fist to his mouth and gave a fake cough before crossing his legs to look business-like. Business-like, my butt.
Rolling my eyes, I brought my elbow back as hard as I could and it met with a hard, firm stomach, just as I hoped. I heard a short yelp behind me.
"Don't do that, Blake," I spoke calmly, swiveling my chair around.
I was expecting him to be doubled over in pain, but he simply flashed me one of his perfect smiles and reached over to ruffle my hair. His touch brought that weird feeling back to my stomach. I started to smooth it down, but I stopped. This is not good. Blake is starting to grow on me!
"Ok, ok, now that that's over, we have some things to discuss," Luke's face turned serious yet again as his eyes trained on me.
Blake rested his elbows on the back of my chair, and I started to squirm uncomfortably. Luke didn't notice that, and turned back to the control panel.
"Fire away," I flicked a piece of my hair from my face and pressed my lips in a tight smile.
"So far, people seem to like your covers..." Luke started. That got a snort from Blake and me as we remembered what happened after my cover of Viva La Vida went on Z100 a few days ago.
I had gained about a thousand followers on Twitter, since my cover got replayed quite often (it was actually very annoying). Luke put the cover on iTunes for ninety nine cents, and an overwhelming amount of people bought it. Of course, I had plenty of people say how terrible of a singer I was. It kind of reminded me of my reoccurring dream of my dad. But I didn't pay attention.
"...so there ya have it," Luke said proudly, crossing his arms in a smug matter.
I blinked in surprise. Was I really in la-la land that entire time?
Glancing at Blake, who was standing near me, I saw that he swiped his black hair to the right side of his forehead. His hands were stuffed in his pockets, and he had a thoughtful expression written across his features. I was guessing that whatever Luke had to say was important.
