I look out the car window, I hear Luke panting hard.
"You okay?" I ask him softly.
"Yeah, my leg hurts like hell. But yeah." he breaths heavy.
"Let me see it." I say lifting his leg onto the seat of the car and roll up his pants revealing the wound.
His leg is swollen and red. It's warm and a foul smelling, yellowish liquid comes from it. My stomach churns at the disgusting infection.
"Luke, your leg is infected." I swallow hard trying not to throw up.
"That's just great..." he mumbles.
"We need to get you medicine." I say to him.
"Nick, if we pass a pharmacy, stop the car and let me know. There would be medicine for Luke in there." I say to Nick.
"Okay, but do you even know what to get?" He asks.
"I guess stuff that disinfects wounds and pills to stop viral infections." I say.
"Sounds good." he says.
Hours of driving pass, we've been on a highway that seems like it leads to no where.
Luke lets out a moan.
"How are you feeling?" I ask.
"To be honest, I've been better." he says.
I scoot over on the seat getting closer to him. I place my hand on his forehead.
"Oh my god Luke! You're burning up!" I worry.
"Ugh, I know Clem." he takes a deep breath and lays his head against the seat of the car.
"This isn't good." I say.
"I'm feelin' really dizzy." he shivers.
I lay my head on Luke's chest, he wraps his arm around my back.
"Clem, I--"
"Shh!" I interrupt him.
"But--"
"Shhh!!" I interrupt him again. I listen for his heart beat. It had an irregular rhythm.
"Nick, we need to get him supplies soon. He's going to die if we just leave him like this."
"I know Clem, but I haven't passed anything, there's nothing out here." Nick says.
I look back at Luke and see that he's already fast asleep.
"Clem, you should get some rest too." Nick says.
"Okay." I say uneasily.
I snuggle up against Luke's warm body and drift to sleep.
I'm woken up to the sound of Luke and Nick talking to each other. I'm laying on the opposite side of the car seat. Luke must of moved me.
I lift my head up and see Luke doubled over, with his hands on his stomach.
"Luke are yo--" I'm cut off when Luke starts vomiting violently.
"Eugh!" I instinctively pull my feet off of the ground on to the seat of the car.
"Fuck!" He wipes his mouth.
"Luke, thanks for making it wreak like shit in here!" Nick complains.
He looks horrible, his skin has lost all of its color and his hair is drenched with sweat.
"Nick! You need to find a city now!" I order.
"I see one up ahead. But it looks like we've got about another 10 miles to go." He says.
"Well drive faster!" I grit my teeth.
"Clem, if I die. I want you to look after Nick for me." he says looking at me straight in the eye.
"You won't die." I say trying to hold back tears.
"Clem--"
"No! You're not going to die!!" I shout.
He sighs.
"Luke, I'm not letting you die, I'm gonna get you medicine." I feel a tears drop off my face.
I look outside of the window and see that we're close to the city. I feel some relief knowing we're close by.
"Okay, so now I have to find a pharmacy... this should be fun." Nick says sarcastically.
"You're gonna be okay Luke." I grab his hand and squeeze it tight for re assurance.
I turn my head to him and see him passed out.
"Nick we don't have much time!" I worry.
"I know! Look we're in the city already, and I see a pharmacy up ahead." he says.
It feels like the weight of the world was just lifted off of my shoulders.
As we get closer to the pharmacy, I get a better look at what the sign says.
