Chapter 5

It's been three weeks since the lunch with Niall and I hadn't heard from him.

Then again, we hadn't had the chance to exchange phone numbers anyway.

By now he was already in Ireland again and I was stuck here.

I laid in bed, not wanting to get out of the warm blankets. My side was killing me.

Last night I had decided that a bowl of popcorn would be good with the movie me and Steven were watching. But when I got a handful he reminded of how much I didn't need it.

And I just had to come back with a smart ass comment.

I reluctantly got out of bed and walked to the mirror, lifting up my shirt. Purple and yellow bruises covered my prominent ribcage, one of them had swelled up causing a bump the size of my fist.

How had I gotten myself into this? I never thought I'd be in an abusive relationship. But I loved Steven. And he loved me.

Or at least at one time he did.

Me and him had met in Highschool. He was a junior and I was a freshman.

The only class we had together was band, and that was great. We always went to competitions and could spend more time together. We were never official though, and I realize now that his behavior then should have clued me in on what he would turn into.

But no one else could love me. He was my first for everything. He showed me how disgusting and ugly I was and made me better. And he still loved me even though I wasn't up to his standards.

At least those were the things he told me. He said he was doing me a favor.

I let my shirt fall back down, and heard my stomach grumble. Steven wasn't going to be home today, so I had the house to myself for once.

As I walked down the stairs I could see that the house was a complete mess. Last night when we wnet to bed everything was in its proper place, but now? It looked like our own personal tornado had ransacked the front room.

Had he done this on purpose? Messed up the house so that I'd have to stay inside all day and clean?

Seriously.

After everything was back in its place in the living room I walked into the kitchen, hoping it wasn't in the same state.

Thankfully the disaster was only in one room.

I dug in the freezer and pulled out some frozen pancakes, popping them in the microwave.

While I waited I flipped on the small television in the kitchen.

" And today in the pop culture world" the announcer said. " Pop star Niall Horan from One Direction was seen in the downtown district. "

They flashed a picture of Niall surrounded by teen girls with cameras.

"Police were called to the scene to ensure the safety of everyone involved."

I sat back down with my pancakes. So Niall was still here huh?

I decided to leave the t.v. On for background noise as I started in on my pancakes.

Before I could take another bite my phone rang, Stevens face lighting up the screen.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Maddie. Remember that museum you talked about at lunch a few weeks ago? "

"Yeah? What about it?"

"Are you... Eating?"

I quit chewing my food and looked down at the plate.

"No, I-I'm not"

"Really? Well I guess your cheeks are just getting bigger then. Anyways..."

His words faded into the background as I pushed the pancakes away from me and into the trash.

"Is that okay? MADDIE! Are you listening?"

I snapped back to the phone call

"I'm sorry, what were you saying."

He breathed heavily into the phone.

" I said I'm sorry about the mess I left. I couldn't find the files I needed this morning to show the department heads and I was running late. So I figured as an apology I'd take you to that art museum. I'll be there at 5 to pick you up. See if you can squeeze yourself into your black dress, for God'a sake please try to look decent. Love you, bye"

I didn't know whether to feel hurt by his words, or excited that he was actually taking me out.
