~the next day~
I woke up to the sound of Loki's light snoring far off from the camp fire, we had slept on different sides of it, Loki giving me the privacy I didn't really want but he thought I deserved, being the gentleman he is. I sat up to see the fire had died during the night and I saw the sun making its way above the tree tops. "Loki...Loki, wake up." I shook his shoulder, his emerald eyes snapped open and met my blue ones. His eyes, just made me want to confess my feelings for him right there, but something held me back. He started to get up and I backed away from him, turning around to stare deeply at the glowing embers of the dead fire. When I was just deep in thought really, it made me wonder about him even more. I began to brush my mane of hair over my right shoulder so I wouldn't have to make eye contact with him, I was scared I was going to admit everything if I looked into those eyes again. And he might laugh at me. He just placed his hand on my left shoulder and I looked up at him, his eyes were dark because the sun was behind his raven haired head.
"Are you alright, Mairi?" he said my name as if it was a sacred thing, it made me wonder about his feelings for me. Probably 'just friend' feelings. "I'm fine...just, cold I guess." His hands draped something around my shoulders, it was his cape. The green fabric billowed down my body, I treated the silk like a blanket and wrapped it around my surprisingly freezing body. "Are you feeling better now?" he asked softly. I nodded and mumbled a small 'thank you', his eyes met mine and it made me feel like everything around me disappeared...except him. "Well...good-morning." Loki said with a smile on his face. I smiled back at him, blush tinging my fur covered cheeks.
"We should probably try and find out where we are exactly today." I said looking at the sky, Loki stared at me, obviously confused. "What do you mean? It could take forever to find ou-"I cut him off as I shot into the air in the form of an eagle. When I hit the clouds, mist sprayed into my face and a cool feeling shot down my small spine. I had a brilliant view of the forest below me and I could see a dirt path near our camp site that led to an open road. I shot back down and perched myself on a fallen log next to the campfire and shifted into my natural form.
I sat on the log, enjoying the view of Loki's shocked face. "You...you just..." he pointed up to sky like I had just painted it. "Calm down...I told you, once I learnt how...I could change into different animals." I explained calmly, chuckling at his expression. "Come on, there is an open road this way..." It was my turn to take hold of his hand and lead him somewhere.
After a ten minute journey to get to the road (It looked closer in the air), we finally made it and I glanced at the black tarmac. "That looks weird..." I said bending down to touch it. It was cold and it hurt to touch it a little bit because parts were sticking up and sharp. I stepped away from it as some of it stuck to my skin (Fur covered the outer side of my hand while the other side has no fur, like a cat's paw.). I picked the minerals out of my skin one by one, Loki watching my actions intently. "Funny..." I laughed to myself, finding the new mineral peculiar. "This doesn't help us find out where we are." Loki pointed out, very impatient indeed. "Well, where do you think we are, mighty and powerful god!?" I said to him sarcastically throwing my hands into the air and shaking them like I was afraid of his power. He laughed at my sarcasm, his tongue peeking out at the edge of his teeth as he shook with humour, it was a cute smile I decided. "Brooklyn, it looks like." He answered my 'question' looking around him. "How did you know that?" I asked him, my eyebrows meeting in curiosity. Loki pointed to the other side of the road, I turned around to see a sign that said 'Welcome to Brooklyn!' with a smiling lumber jack next to it, giving a thumbs up.
"Huh." I breathed to myself, surprised by the answer that had been thrusted into our faces. A metallic beast rushed across the road and scared the life out of me, a dog barked out of the eye of it. "Oh my gods...what was that?" I said after jumping away from the road, fear flooding into my eyes. "I believe...that was a car." Loki said, staring at the 'car' speeding down the road, surprised at my lack of knowledge of this planet. "If that surprises you, you've got a lot to learn." Loki said, heading towards Brooklyn. "Why don't we go the other way?" I suggested looking down the other side of the road. Next thing I know, Loki has my shoulders in his grasp and is giving me an intense stare. "One, there is more forest that way," he pointed out, gesturing towards the Brooklyn sign, the lumber jacks smile was starting to annoy me. "Two, you're in a state that would surprise and possibly...scare, the humans." He finished with a sad look in his eyes. "What do you mean?" I asked him. "Humans, aren't familiar to things outside this world, such as...us." Loki said letting go of my shoulders. I hugged myself as the heat he had enveloped me in disappeared as soon as it came.
"Loki...you've been here before haven't you?" the look he gave me confirmed my suspicions, whenever he last came here, he did something unforgiveable. "What's that way?" I asked him, my finger shaking as I pointed in the direction he had been against in going. "New York." He mumbled loud enough for me to hear. "What happened in this 'New York'?" I said the new words like they were a foreign language to me, which it felt like, but it was in English. Confusing. "Somethings...I don't want to tell you." His lack of information shocked me. "Loki tell me!" I shouted at him, I was shaking and my ears were pressing into my hair. I was scared, I was expecting him to tell me something I didn't want to hear. But he just tucked his sleeve up his arm and revealed a gold bangle around his wrist.
I was surprised for two reasons, 1: It fit him, 2: he still had it. "If I'm going to show you, I might as well give you your disguise back." He removed the bangle from his arm and placed it in my palm. "It never worked on me, being the god of disguises." He chuckled sadly. His hands wrapped around mine as he pressed the cold metal into my skin. When he let go, I looked down at my palm and took the bangle out of it. "You kept it?" I asked the rhetorical question as I held the piece of jewellery to the sun, watching it glint in the light. "I've worn it since you gave it to me...and if you're wondering how I got it to fit me, I used some magic on it. It adjusts its size to the wearer." He smirked at the effects taking place as I put the bangle on, it shrunk till it fit me perfectly. I looked up at him, I still had that scared feeling lingering around me, and it wasn't going to leave me alone.
Then the feeling of transformation took over me after 17 years, I was changing into a human once again. My fur shrunk until it became mere blonde hairs scattered around my body. My ears shifted to the sides of my head and the points shrunk. My tail sneaked under my skirt until it was part of my tail bone inside my body. My nails became smaller until they couldn't be used as retractable claws anymore. My fangs transforming into normal canine teeth. My paws became feet and I could feel my toes grow out again, my new feet bare against the grass. The blue streak in my hair still intertwined with my fringe. I was a human. "Do I look weird?" I asked Loki, concern riddling my new face. "You look different...but not weird." Loki made me feel better, but not 100%.
He offered his arm out to me as he himself and in a flash of green light, transformed into a man I have never seen before. His short blonde hair pointed towards the sky and his new blue eyes were the complete opposites of Loki's. I stepped back from him, not recognising him at all. "It's still me...don't worry." Loki's voice came from the stranger's mouth. "You look different." A smile cracked on my lips and made Loki smile back at me, I finally took his arm and we walked towards 'New York'.
The first thing that faced us was the large red bridge, Loki told me it was called the 'Brooklyn Bridge' since it connected New York to Brooklyn, of course. What I was afraid of was that it was suspended in the air and above a huge pool of water. "I don't think it's safe." I said stupidly, fear settling into my stomach. "Look at all the cars racing across it." Loki pointed out, my arm still tucked tight on top of his. "It's the heights and the water, isn't it?" I nodded into his chest as I closed my eyes again. Loki walked behind me as he dropped my arm and he wrapped his around my waist, "Loki, what are you doing?" I asked him, afraid to open my eyes, but I felt the air rush towards me from my left. We were on the bridge.
"Loki, if we get across this bridge alive, I'm going to kill you." I told him and I felt him chuckle behind me. His arms were still wrapped firmly around my waist, his chest pressing into my back, and he was guiding me across the bridge. I was too scared to open my eyes, I could feel the sun against my right side though. It was setting, the day had gone by so fast. "Mairi, open your eyes and look at the sunset." Loki tempted me, I was so tempted to open my eyelids, I was afraid of seeing the water a gazillion feet below us though. His hands found their way onto my flesh coloured cheeks and he caressed them until I opened my eyes and they were met with green ones. He had changed his eye colour back to his own, "Eyes on mine, alright?" he ordered, his breath mingling with mine. He must have teleported in front of me. His magic must've been concealed towards the humans because no one noticed how he had managed to get in front of me in such a narrow lane.
