Death is not as easy as it sounds. First comes the betrayal. Next comes the suffering. Then comes the bleeding. Last comes the long agonizing hours as you await your death. It is in no way easy at all.

I was always afraid of dying. When I was younger I would always drop to my hands and knees and crawl through the middle of the bridge that was drawn above the moat. I'd put on as much protective gear possible when learning how to fight. I was never really considered a "brave" boy.
Until now.
Now I can say that I've fled the castle and lived my life as a wanted fugitive. I can say that I've fought various guards for the one I truly love. I can say the one I truly love is alive because of me. I can say that the one I truly love should be dead because of me.
Footsteps approach from behind me and I crane my neck as much as I can to see who it is. The stock rattles a bit. They step in front of me with a large bucket of a variety of rotten foods.
Another guard.
He sets the bucket down and grabs a tomato from it.
Great another couple of hours waiting for the pieces to slip off of my skin and into the accumulating pile beneath my face.
The guard presses the tomato beneath my nose. I cringe when I inhale the odor.
"Like that smell?" He asks. "Cause that's the only thing you'll be smelling for a while."
He begins to walk away from me.
"Fuck you." I spit at him.
He turns around and looks at me confused.
"Oh wait let me guess, you are surprised that I the prisoner have the audacity to speak to you in any way, shape, or form."
He thinks it over.
"Um... Well....you piece of...erm...scum-"
I cut him off.
"Really that's the best you can do?"
He starts to say something then gives up.
I chuckle.
I knew it would infuriate him and that's exactly what I wanted.
He grips the tomato firmly and with all of his might throws it at the wall.
"You missed." I say flatly.
"Oh I didn't miss." He says smirking.
I am utterly confused by what he means and in my moments of thought something hits me in the back of the head.
"Fuck!" I huff out as the impact shoots a sharp pain through my body.
The guard begins to laugh along with an unidentified being somewhere behind me.
The guard walks away in hysterics as I try to undo the hinges on the pillory. I watch the streets clear as the sun begins to set.
Another restless night thinking about Ashton. His adorable brown hair. His button nose. The way his head fits into the crook of my neck. Another one of those nights.
My eyes slowly begin to shut but someone taps my shoulder. My head jerks up.
"Luke!" A voice I know all too well whispers.
Ashton. It's Ashton. He's come back.
He jiggles the hinges of the pillory and I hear them click. He raises the wood that has trapped me between it and I jump out and hug him."What are you doing here?" I ask crying into his shoulder.
He rubs my back and whispers, "I couldn't let them kill you."
He tugs at my arm.
"C'mon."
He pulls me towards the thick forest and we run as fast as we can.
"Stella gave me some tips on how to get out and some money for when we make it to the next town." He huffs.
We are actually going to make it out of the kingdom. We will actually be able to start a life together. Who knew we would have a happy ending.
I stop running and so does he.
"I love you Ashton Irwin."
I kiss him passionately but make sure to not go to far.
We run for the hills and don't look back. Soon enough we will reach the next town and then the one after that and for once I will finally be happy.
We stop when it begins to get dark and set up camp next to a large tree. Thankfully stella packed a few covers and a single pillow meaning we would have to share. Ashyon lays out the first cover then lays down the pillow. We both lie down on the cover and pull the other two on top of us. I wrap an arm around my love and watch as he drifts off to sleep.
"Don't worry we'll be there soon." I whisper as I close my eyes.
"It'll all be worth it."
