What Happened to Us?

Chapter Thirty One

(Dani's POV)

When we open the door to Lauren's room, there is blood everywhere.

"HER STATS ARE DROPPING!!"

"WE NEED TO GET HER INTO THE O.R. STAT"

"WHERE IS ALL THIS BLOOD COMING FROM?!?!"

The frantic screams of the nurses are not making the situation any better.

"OUT OF THE WAY!!" I hear someone yell and I'm yanked out of the way just in time for several doctors to come into the room, and load Lauren onto the stretcher.

They rush out with her so quickly I barely catch a glimpse of her, but that doesn't stop me from seeing the large puddle of blood soaking through her hospital gown.

"LAUREN!!!!" I scream, and I try to fight myself out of my sister's grip, but only more arms and bodies restrain me.

"LAUREN!!!!" I scream again and again until I can only drop to the floor in sobs.

"LISA WAIT!!!" I hear someone, who I presume to be Christina, yell, and I look up just in time to see Lisa sprinting off, Katherine right on her tail.

For a moment I'm concerned, but the feeling doesn't last long, I'm too buried within my own grief.

"She can't die she can't die" I whisper.

I then feel the body behind me kneel down and enclose their arms around me.

I can tell it's Christina simply because, well, she smells like Christina, and for a moment I'm taken aback. I never thought I would end up in her arms again.

Not after what I did.

But I shove my own self pity aside and lean into her embrace and sob loudly, not even attempting to quiet myself.

What happened??!? She was fine yesterday. She was doing so well.

"What happened?" I whisper and I just feel Christina shake her head.

"I don't know, I don't know"

I close my eyes and inhale deeply, trying to imagine myself anywhere else, in any other situation.

But reality is far too persistent. It's right in front of me, presenting me with my worst fears over and over.

"I'm going to go check on Lisa and Katherine" I faintly hear Amy say.

The click of footsteps, and then, dead silence.

I never believed it could be this quiet in a hospital, it seemed to constantly be bustling with emergent patients and heartbroken families.

But it's as if the world is holding it's breath, and time has stopped.

"Christina..." I whisper, and I bring myself to look her in the eye.

Immediately I wish I hadn't, as the amount of sheer pain within them, it bends any self control I have left.

"She's not gonna die right?" I ask. It's such an impossible question, but Christina had never been one to not have an answer.

In a moment of pure desperation, I pray that this holds true.

But my prayers are discarded as Christina lowers her head and whispers the three words I had been dreading to hear.

"I don't know"
