I'm woken up but an angry scream. Ha, so much for staying awake.
"What the fuck did you do?" the boy screams at me. Still a little groggy from my unplanned sleep, I don't respond right away.
He grabs me by the collar of my shirt and brings me close to his face. With my eyes locked on to his fiery red ones, I'm alert at once.
"You were unconscious!" I try to explain, panicking over his tightening grip. "I-I couldn't just leave you there in the water; you'd have drowned!"
He takes a deep breath, exhaling sharply through his nose, "Well, now look at what you've done. Who knows where we are now?" He throws me back down in which I land roughly on my tailbone, causing me to wince. He turns his back towards me and looks out over the horizon of the sea.
After a few moments, he points straight ahead of him, "There." I lean over to one side to see what he's pointing at but I see nothing but water. "The closest land is in that direction."
"How can you tell?" I ask. He looks over his shoulder, clearly annoyed.
"What kind of magician are you?" he hisses. "You just ask the Rukh."
I nod slowly, not knowing what the 'Rukh' is. It's easy to tell that asking questions just bothers him.
"A 'thank you' would be nice," he grumbles, still having his back face me.
I raise an eyebrow, "What exactly should I thank you for?" His attitude is getting on my last nerve. "If anything, you should be thanking me for saving your sorry ass!"
"Huh?!" He whips back around and points a finger at me. "Just who the hell do you think you're talking to, you ignorant prick!"
"I don't know!" I scream back at him. "You never told me your name!" I take in deep breaths, a little bit surprised at my outburst. He raises his eyebrows in shock, but soon recovers with an amused expression.
"Ah! Now I understand why you can't thank me properly!" He starts to laugh, as if it were some silly mistake. He's not taking me seriously in the slightest.
"Anyway," he smiles and jabs a thumb towards himself. "The name's Judal." He stays in that position, as if expecting a certain reaction.
"Well, great," I go to reply. "I'm (f/n)."
"I don't care about your name!" He whines, disappointed in my reaction. "Don't you know who I am? I'm the best Magi that's ever existed!"
I scoff, "Haven't you been paying attention at all? I don't remember anything besides my own name." I take a breath, "As much as I hate to admit it, you actually know more about me than I do."
There's a stillness in the air now as no one speaks. His hand is on his chin deep in thought.
"So," he finally speaks up. "You definitely don't recognize who I am at all?"
I groan in frustration, "Get over yourself already."
"Oh, shut up," he crosses his hands over his chest. "You're probably just a peasant, born lucky as a magician."
"Stop pouting," I retaliate. I smirk at a comment I'm about to make that'll make his inflated ego pop, "How could an assumably peasant magician, like me, knock a great Magi, like you, unconcious?"
I stifle laughter as his face begins to get a red tint.
"I-It was pure luck!" he insists to no avail. "It was dark and I wasn't able to see that well."
"Whatever, Judal," I sigh, smug that I've got him under my thumb. "Think what you want, but in the end, I still won."
"I don't lose," he retorts. "Actually, I can't remember why exactly we were fighting."
"There was no reason," I grumble in annoyance. "Except for you to kill me for fun."
"Ah, you're right!" he agrees with me in a positive tone. "In fact, I could just kill you now, nice and slow. Especially since you've dragged me on this shit excuse for a boat."
"How exactly are you planning to do so? I'm curious," I reply confidently, only because I'm trusting my abilities that were shown just last night.
"First, I've already noticed that this boat has no oar," Judal begins to rattle off. "Second, you have no control over your magic, wanna know why?"
I sigh, "Why?"
" 'Cause you're an idiot, that's why," he insults me, resulting in me rolling my eyes. "I could just use my own perfected magic to just fly away in the direction the Rukh had pointed to, leaving you here all alone to die."
I start to get nervous because he's right. Without him, I'd die, but he doesn't need me to survive.
"But you owe me," I start to protest.
He scoffs at my claim, "You really think I feel obligated to help you because you saved my life? I couldn't care less about you, honestly."
I'm thinking hard, trying to think my way out. As far as I've seen so far, Judal is always searching for amusement in almost everything he does, which unfortunately may mean another's demise.
"Even if what you say is true, you wouldn't do it," I say to him, looking nonchalantly at my nails. He slightly furrows his eyebrows and puts a hand on his hip.
"You can't tell me what I would or wouldn't do," he hisses. "I'll do whatever I want as long as it pleases me."
"And that's exactly my point," I'm just free styling at this point. "Where's the fun in killing me in such a manner? Sounds pretty boring to me."
He looks confused at my words, which may or may not be good, "What do you mean? It seems perfectly fine, seeing as how I thought of it in the first place."
I take a deep breath, "How about, instead of you paying me back by sparing my own life, you kill me in the most exciting and exhilarating way possible." What am I doing! Whatever, at least I think I've bought myself some time from this bloody thirsty brat.
My words immediately piqued his interest and a smile forms upon his face, "Well, now (f/n), I think we've got ourselves a deal."
"R-Really?" I initially ask but immediately cough and take on a more serious tone, "I mean, of course." I hold out my hand as a way to initiate the bond-forming handshake.
He grasps my hand too tightly and doesn't even shake it, he just tightens his grip, "This is going to be a hell of a lot of fun."
No, it's not.
