Kimble's POV
Ezra wasn't brought back to his cell. He wasn't at the next meal either. I kept an eye out for him, but he had simply vanished. I was afraid that they might have killed him. I told Conner about my worries, but he didn't do much to help.
"You would know if they had killed him," he told me. "They always make a big announcement before dumping the body into the lava. And they force everyone to watch."
I went to bed that night terrified for Ezra. It was possible he had escaped, but I didn't feel like that was the case.
"Ezra, I wish I knew where you were," I whispered as I closed my eyes.
Kimble? Ezra's voice said in my mind. My eyes snapped open as I glanced around. I even sat up so that I could get a better look. No, Ezra wasn't there. For a moment, I had let myself believe that my imagination was real.
"Now I'm imagining things," I mumbled.
Kimble! Ezra's voice repeated, more insistent this time.
"Ezra?" I asked quietly.
Finally! he said. I knew it would work!
"What would work?" I whispered.
Sometimes it's as if my master can talk to me across long distances, Ezra explained. I figured that I might be able to do something similar, contact you or Conner from my new cell. I've been trying to contact Conner for hours, but he never responded. As soon as I tried with you, you replied.
"Where did they take you?"
I don't know. It's a cylinder metal room. Only one entrance and exit. They stuck me in some sort of suspension thing. It glows blue and makes it almost impossible to move.
"Sounds awful."
It's fine. They told me that I can start joining you guys for meals again, as long as I behave myself.
"Too bad your last escape attempt didn't work."
Yeah. Ezra chuckled. I'm not giving up though. If I can contact you, maybe I can contact my master back on Lothal.
"Is that your home?" For a moment, Ezra was silent. I waited as he gathered his thoughts.
Yeah, he finally replied. It used to be. Now my home is on board the Ghost, along with the other rebels.
"How many of you are there?"
Well, there's my master Kanan. And Hera. She's the pilot and a Twi'lek. And there's Zeb. He's one of the last Lasats. He smells and is grumpy, but he's a good friend. And there's Chopper. He's an old droid with an attitude. And Sabine. She's an expert on explosives and art.
"Sounds exciting. Is Sabine your sister?" There was another long pause. I sensed that I had hit a sensitive topic.
No. I don't have any siblings and my parents were taken by the Empire.
"I'm so sorry," I said. "I had no idea."
It's fine. It's just not something I normally talk about.
"I never knew my parents. The only family I've ever had was my brother Conner and-" I didn't get a chance to finish, because Ezra cut me off.
Inquisitor! We'll talk later!
Ezra went silent, but I could sense that the mental link was still there. I smiled. It was comforting to know that he was still alive. And better yet, we now had a way to communicate over long distances. I was sure that Ezra would be able to think of a new escape plan. He wouldn't fail us.
