Waking up my body hurt everywhere, I was completely sore but I didn't mind. Even with all the pain I went through, I'd go through it all over again as long as the end result was the same.
This morning I never would have guessed that in only a matter of hours I would finally have my precious bundle of joy to hold in my arms. My due date was by the end of the week and I wasn't expecting to go into labor a couple of days early. With things so busy around the school, I never thought to prepare for an early labor. But luckily for me Alex was more than ready to step in and make sure we were ready to head to the hospital. Although he was a nervous reck, he still did incredibly and was able to calm the both of us down.
Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, I look beside me to find Thomas not in his crib. Panic takes over me until I look over my left to find Alex holding baby Thomas close to his chest whispering down to him. The sight of them warms my heart and glazes my eyes with unshed tears.
The look on his face shows nothing but adoration and love. He holds him with the most delicacy I've ever seen him handle anything. As though he's afraid that at any given moment he may break or disappear from his arms.
Listening in close, I can hear his whispers towards our newborn son.
"Hey there little buddy, it's your dad. You may not be able to understand what I'm saying but I just want you to know I'll always be here for you no matter what, through all the hard and the good times. I promise to keep you safe from all the dangers that may arise. Promise to always have time for you no matter how busy I may be. I promise to teach you the good from the bad. To be patient with you even through your rebellious teenage years, and make fun of you in front of your crushes. I promise to care and love you and your mother always; to be strong when you need me to but also understanding. And that no matter what, you can always count on me to help you, I can promise you that." Alex whispers ever so quietly, kissing the top of his head. "I won't ever let anything happen to you."
Hearing his promise I can't help but let the tears fall from my eyes. There is no doubt in my mind that Alex will be an amazing father. Just by looking at the two of them now and hearing what he promised him, I know that Alex will always do whatever is in his power to keep out child safe.
"You know eventually, he'll grow older, possibly developed powers of his own, and will want to fight like we have." I speak up.
"Well then we'll be right there along side him to make sure he's ok." He answers back without even looking up from his gaze on Thomas, seeming unsurprised by my sudden intrusion.
"Well what'll happen when we're not there to fight with him?" I question back, carefully sitting up.
This time he does look up and makes his way closer to me, carefully placing Thomas in my arms.
"Then I can rest peacefully knowing that I would have done everything I could to ensure that he knows how to protect himself." He whispers, kissing my temple.
"Uh-huh. I'll just remind you of that in a couple of years."
"Sweetheart I have a feeling I won't be the only one worrying" he playfully chides.
"That's beside the point. But we'll worry about that when the time comes. For now I'll worry about whether he needs his diaper changed, if he's hungry, and making sure his father doesn't making him into a little trouble maker." I playfully respond.
"I am not a trouble maker." he scoffs.
"Well you do have a bad habit of sneaking up on me."
"Well maybe I will teach him a few mischievous tricks, but nothing too bad. Promise." He smirks down at me.
"I'll keep you to that." I say pressing my lips against his.
"I can't believe he's finally with us." he tells me, his eyes glazing over. "He's more beautiful than I could have ever imagined."
"He is isn't he. You'll grow up to be an amazing man, just like your father." I tell the now sleeping Thomas in my arms, "And just like your father, I too promise to do everything to make sure you are always safe and loved. No matter what I will always be there with you, even when I can't physically. I love you Thomas, and I always will, I promise you."
