"Did you hear? Chance Matthews moved back in next door." Alex said as we walked together from school.

"Yeah I know. Who do you think mom sent to give them cookies?"

Alex looked at me. "Listen Andi. I don't want you to get hurt again okay? Just be safe if you're around him."

I thought back to my conversation with Chance yesterday.

"I don't think I'm going to be around him any time soon Alex."

Alex looked skeptical. "I don't know A."

"Andi!"

Alex and I stopped walking and turned around.

Sure enough Chance came bounding towards us. His long legs got him here within a few seconds.

"Hi Chance." I greeted, giving him a small smile.

Chance zeroed his eyes on Alex and glared at him. He scrutinized my brother with his jade eyes.

Alex glared at Chance too, protectively wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

Chance visibly relaxed but continued to glare at him.

"I'll walk you home." Chance suggested but it sounded more like a statement.

"It's fine she's my sister." Alex argued.

"I'm going to walk her home." He insisted.

The rest of my walk home had included Chance and Alex arguing.

When I finally did get home, Sky had invited me to go to the movies with her, so I was currently waiting for her outside the theatre.

I saw her brightly colored pink, blue, and purple hair before I saw her bouncing to me. Her brown eyes were wide with excitement.

"So how'd it go?" Sky asked immediately. She had stopped bouncing and was now walking with me in to the theatre.

"How did what go?"

"You know," she waggled her eyebrows. "Did he say yes?"

"Sky, I didn't ask him and I won't. If he wants to come to school he can. If he doesn't oh well." I shrugged.

Sky ordered the tickets an I stood inside the crowded building. I spotted Chance with a boy with blonde hair and a boy with dark brown hair.

"Andi!" Chance's eye lit up and he dragged the two to me.

"Hey."

"This is Tyler," he pointed to the blonde one, "and this is Erik." He concluded, pointing at the dark haired one.

"Hi."

"Hey Chance, can I have 40 dollars for snacks?" The dark haired one, Erik, asked.

"Sure." Chance said, hand him two crisp 20s.

I frowned, furrowing my eyebrows.

"Chance have you ever been to the movies?"

"Nope."

I furrowed my eyebrows even more when Erik came back with just a bucket of popcorn.

"That took all 40 dollars?" I asked, glaring at the boy. The boy glared right back.

"Yeah stuff here is expensive."

I pulled Chance to the side. "Chance these aren't your friends. They're just using you for money."

He quickly pushed me away.

"You don't get to say that about my friends."

And with that he disappeared into the crowd.

•••••

Why do I even care? He's not my friend. If he wants to be friends with them then so be it.

"Are you sure you don't need a ride? Sky asked for the third time.

"For the hundredth time, yes I am sure."

"Okay," Sky said defeated. "See ya."

"Bye."

I walked down the sidewalk, passing by several dark alleys.

"Just the girl we wanted to talk to."

A hand wrapped around my mouth before dragging me into one of the alleys. It was the boys before. I shoved the blonde one, I forgot his name, off me.

"Leave me alone." I gasped, freaking out inside.

"We want to talk-"

Before he could finish I ran away. If they're hanging around Chance, they're bad news. I pumped my arms and legs, running as fast as I could. Thanks to dancing, I had built up a pretty good stamina but they would eventually catch up to me.

I didn't pay attention and I tripped over a crack in the sidewalk. I skidded to the ground.

"Finally." They boy from earlier grabbed my arm and yanked me up, none too gently.

"What did you say to Chance?" Erik asked as blonde held me.

"I- I said that," I gulped, feeling tears begin to brim my eyes. "I said that if you were truly his friends, you wouldn't use his money! Chance isn't a bad person! So you can't use him like that!"

Blonde hurled me to the ground before lifting up his hand. I flinched but an arm got in his way.

"You should leave Tyler." A deep voice said, grabbing his hand.

"Or what?" Tyler snarled, glaring at the person.

I looked up and from the light that was flickering by the door in the alley we were in, I could see it was Chance.

"Chance..." I whispered. Chance grabbed Tyler's shirt, lifting him in the air with ease, as if he weighed no more than a feather. Tyler dangled a couple inches off the ground for a few seconds before he was hurled into Erik.

"Don't talk to me or Andi ever again."

Chance lifted me up gently and quick and pulled me along with him.

"Where are we going?"

"I'm taking you home." The walk home was quiet. 10 minutes later, Chance and I stopped at my gate.

"Is school fun?" Chance asked quietly, not meeting my eyes.

"What, uh, yeah I guess."

"I'll go."

"What?" I looked at him with wide eyes.

"I'll go as long as your there too."

I felt the heat flood my cheeks.

"Oh uh..." I smiled softly. "That's great."

Hesitantly I wrapped my arms around his waist and pulled him into a hug. I felt Chance tense but quickly hug me back.

"Thanks for saving me. Goodnight Chance."
