"they thought I had guts
they were wrong
I was only frightened of
more important things"***
Math would end in 20 minutes and I stare at the clock ticking hoping time would fly, so it can finally be lunch.
I look at the desk beside me, the person who sits there never shows up because it's always empty. I wondered who it was. After a few minutes of torturous math, the bell finally rung and me along with the rest of the class stormed out like lost kittens.
I order my lunch from the cafe that consisted of fries, a burger, salad, broccoli, and a drink. I wait in line to pay.
"You're eating all that by yourself?" A voice says from behind and I turn around to meet with the person,
It was the guy from last night, I think it was Evan, I thought he said he doesn't come to school often. I remember looking at him confused, it's not everyday you hear someone say they don't often come to school.
I glare at him, "Yes, I am." I reply back confidently.
It was my turn in line, so I pay for my food. After that he steals one of my fries, and I narrow my eyes at him.
He smirks, and I walk away heading to my usual table. There I see Harper and Conner sucking each other's faces, and I look away in disgust.
"Please refrain from swiping salivas in school, it's not a sight worthy of seeing." I tell them grabbing a fork and starting to eat my salad.
They eventually break out their faces turning red and Harper faces me, "Riley, I forgot to ask you about last night! How'd you get home?" She asks.
"I got saved by a guy," I tell her, I stop myself from saying 'after you ditched me'.
"A guy? Last time I checked you didn't have many guy friends," she says trying to stop herself from sounding rude which failed. I wasn't going to get upset, what she said was somewhat true.
"I don't know him but his name is Evan," I pause, "I think,"
"Are you talking about Evan Jones?" Conner says in disbelief,
I didn't know his last name, but I don't remember being any other Evans in the school, "Yeah, him."
"That guy is bad news," Conner says, and anger builds inside me. He was the one rescued me when Harper and him left me behind, how dare he say that?
"Oh really, why is that?" I ask in a stern voice,
"Well he never shows up to school and I heard he was involved with drug dealing," he explains,
"So you're building up a judgement based on rumours?" I say this time using a higher tone.
"Riley, you don't have to get defensive you don't know him," Harper speaks up looking at me as if I was a mental person.
"Well, he helped me when you guys run off last night leaving me behind, and you have absolutely no right to judge him," I say picking up my tray and leaving. What was wrong with me? I guess I was still upset about them ditching me last night.
Due to my lack of friends, I had nowhere else to sit. Then I spot Evan sitting alone beside the small table near the garbage bin where no one ever sits. What was the deal with him? He didn't seem like the outgoing type, but I definitely would've thought he'd have a lot of friends. I do a stupid thing and head over to him.
He furrows his eyebrows at me confused, "Did I do something to make you think this was okay?" He asked.
"Well, you looked lonely so I thought you could use some company," I say thinking of the first excuse that comes to my mind, there was no way I was telling him I had nowhere else to sit because I got in a stupid argument with my friends about him.
"How generous, but as much as this may come a shock to you, I enjoy my own company." He says.
First real impression? Plain rude.
I shrug, "Want some fries?" I ask
You could tell I was getting desperate.
"Are you trying to bribe me with fries?" He asks,
My face is plastered with an evelish grin, "maybe,"
"Well it's working," he smirks picking up a fry from my tray.
Maybe Evan wasn't so bad after all.
