THIRTEEN

Bit by bit,

everything falls into place.

The stars above their heads

dance as if they were

long lost lovers

longing for touch.

He takes her to another place

and does not tell her where.

but for once,

the destination does not matter to her.

Where did you go?

Why are you here?

Why did you come back?

Why are you doing this?

Why did you leave in the first place?

As the two get out from the car,

Maddie can feel

the wind rushing to her ears.

Below her glitters

the city of lights

consisting of a million

man made stars.

The highest point

of San Francisco,

takes her very breath away.

For it is as if

she is infinite amongst

the sea of mechanical change.

"Three,

look at the stars

from above,

check."

He whispers,

as he leans towards

the city's limit.

Maddie moves

towards the edge

of the little hill,

where Ash was,

and curls her feet

into her chest,

to cover the rapid beating

of her heart.

She wants to ask him

all of the questions

that she had always wanted to

for the past five years,

but instead

she asks him,

"Are you hurting? "

Her eyes widen.

she did not mean to let that slip out.

It must take him off-guard,

because he freezes

and takes

a sharp

intake of breath.

Silver hair falls into his eyes,

covering the words

they want to whisper.

"Maddie,

I think I am."

"I'm

 hurting,

so so much."

the silent screams,

but he does not say

single

word.

The lullaby

that the night sings

is one of anguish

and beauty.

Her fingers twitch.

she wants to reach out to him,

to hold his pale face and silver hair

in the palms of her hands,

and let the tips of her fingers

trace the soft lines of his chin

and his tears,

to trace

the sad curve

that is drawn onto his lips.

Bit by bit,

everything falls into place.
