Walking into my house first, I knew it would save some of the shock if James did. Plus, he looked super awkward. Don't bail on me now! In the breezeway, I turned to him. "Dude, I know you're scared, and a little shocked, and kinda nervous, but please, oh, please, oh pretty please do not bail on me!"

He smiled slightly. "I just realized that I don't know your name."

I straight out laughed, pushing my hand at him. "Hi, Carrie Ann Rice."

He grinned too. "James Lustson." Oooh, and you are very lusty . . .

There was a squeal from the kitchen and then tan arms all around me. My legs, my back, and awkwardly enough, my head. Soon enough everybody took some much needed steps away, save for my mother who only pressed herself closer to me. "Mom, I can't breath down here," I said into her bosom.

She laughed and stepped away. "Oh, Carebear I've missed you so much!" She sighed and hugged me again. "How are you sweety? You look worried! Is everything alright? Do you need some Midol?" She whispered out, "is it that time?"

Shaking my head, I said, "Mom, I just missed you is all! It's been a whole year without the family. Speaking of which," I quickly counted the people in the breezeway. "Where is everybody?"

Momma smiled. "Oh, there all just gettin' reacquainted with home. Come here, Care, I made some food." When my mom finally took her eyes off of me, she gasped. "A--a boy. A boy!"

Here we go. "Momma, this is my boyfriend, James Lusterson."

"Lustson," Charming whispered. "Some girlfriend you are." Just barely before those worlds left his mouth, my Momma had wrapped him in a big ol' Southern Hug.

"Welcome to the family, son! Are you hungry? You need anything? Oh, lord almighty! Where will you sleep?" She ranted as she headed to the kitchen. I could still hear her mumbling as she walked ahead of us.

James elbowed me. "I'm part of the family."

I laughed and elbowed him back. "Not sayin' much. Everybody in town is part of this family!"

"You mean there's more than just Ricky Bobby?"

My mouth literally dropped open. "Don't you talk about him like that!"

"Relax, Kansas. It was a joke."

Huffing, I crossed my arms. "It wasn't very funny."

I took James up to my old room and had him put his things there, and, though I knew my Momma would have none of it, I put my bags there, too.

Momma had baked, and when my Momma bakes, it isn't just a sheet of cookies. With six people in our family, and then almost everybody, except for two of us (well, one now, I guess), having a spouse, a sheet of cookies would never do.

She had tiny little appetizers displayed all over the kitchen. Crackers, cookies, rolls, cheeses, little sandwiches, brownies, fudge, and for those who weren't allergic, apple-nut croissants.
