Now, I'm not a big plane rider. If I can avoid, at all costs, not being on a damn plane I will not hesitate to not be on it. However, driving to Kansas from Manhattan would prove to be a chore; a chore I didn't want to do ever again.
So we rode a plain. It was packed, hot, and smelled like nastiness. Like most planes do.
James seemed a bit put out sitting next to the old guy wearing a bib, but he didn't say anything. I wasn't gonna sit by the old guy. I liked my isle seat.
"So, Charming. What should I know about you?" It'd been a good hour into the plane ride before we really said anything aside from 'hand me that pillow' and 'thanks'. We're so talkative.
He glanced at me and then back to his book. Well, at least he can read. My Pa will like that. "My name's James."
I rolled my eyes, but grinned. "I know your name, silly! But, I mean, where do ya work?"
James stared at me as if I was a first grader. "I work for you."
Oh, right.
"Okay . . . well you gotta say you work somewhere! My parents will be a little put out if they think you're a bum."
James set down his book. "How about you tell me about your parents."
Placing a finger at my chin, I leaned back in my seat and stared out the window. The old guy was drooling. "Well, my Pa works for construction, and my Momma raised us all at home. My Pa's kinda awkward, he doesn't really talk to people outside our family. But he likes to read. My Ma's usually real cheery. She loves to cook. She likes secrets. She's real easy to laugh at things--even silly ol' knock knock jokes." Hmm, what else?
"Peanuts?" We both looked up to a stewardess, dressed in a light gray, with a yellow ribbon on her hat. "Would either of you like some peanuts?" She was overly cheerful and looked as if she wanted to slice her throat.
"No thank you," I spoke while James said, "Sure."
She gave him a tight lipped smile and handed him the little bag. He muttered a thank you and took a handful in his mouth. "I didn't eat breakfast," he spoke through the salt. "You want some?"
I shook my head, my hand coming up to stop him from giving me any. "I'm allergic."
His brows rose and he nodded. "My mom's alergic, too," he said, "I've never met anyone but her who was."
"You want a souvenir?"
To my surprise, he grinned. "Sure."
"Keep your peanut bag, then."
He continued to grin, and got comfortable in the hard, coach seat. "So what else about your parents? Your moms like a house wife?"
I hissed through my teeth. "Don't ever call her that! She would beat you with her swivel mop!"
James bellowed a laugh, waking up the old guy next to us as he went into a coughing fit. Awkwardly, Charming turned to give him a pat on the back a few times, just as a stewardess came with water. "Here you go, sir." She handed him the tiny cup of fluid and then reached into her pockets. "Peanuts for any of you?"
