Chapter Two

I woke up the next morning with a pounding headache and ugly, puffy eyes. I crawled out of my warm cocoon and padded the length of my room and outside where for some alien reason, Rob was sitting against the wall next to the bathroom, snoring and drooling all over the shirt he’d been wearing the day before. I walked over to him and nudged him with my foot. “Rob?” I whispered, nudging him harder.

He groaned and shifted slightly, his snoring growing louder. “Rob!” I whiper-yelled, practically kicking him with my foot. Finally, he woke up, his eyes painfully bloodshot and exhausted.

“W-What’s going on?” He asked, slurring like a drunken Jack Sparrow.

I bent down so I was level with him, my knees cracking loudly from the movement. “Rob, what the hell? Did you just get in?” I asked.

He squinted at me and rubbed his head with his hand. “Uh- I don’t remember? Why?”

“Why?! You’re sleeping in the hallway, looking like you just came back from a war! Are you high?” I asked, my voice rising, but still staying quiet since I didn’t want to wake Ginny. The poor girl was probably already messed up from last night. The last thing she needed was to see her older brother at his all time low.

He snorted and rubbed his head harder with his palm. I sighed and stood up to my full height, towering over him. “Of course you’re high. What was it this time, Rob. Huh? Crack? Speed? Heroin?”

“Woah, woah, woah, Jade, let’s not jump to conclusions. I just went to a party and drank a little maybe hit the bong a couple a times, but that’s it. I swear,” he said, putting his hands up in the air in defense. “After last night’s little episode, who can blame me?”

I crossed my arms over my chest. “Who can blame you? Are you kidding me, Rob? I was upset last night too, but did I go out and risk ruining my entire future just because I felt a little down. Jesus, Rob! What kind of example are you setting for Ginny? What if she saw you out here like this? Huh? What do you think she would think?”

He rolled his eyes. “Okay, Mom. I won’t do it again, but I don’t get it, Jade. I heard you sneak out too. How come I can’t, but you can? I don’t think that’s very fair.”

I sucked in a breath. “I just went over to talk to Hunter. I didn’t go out to a party.”

Rob laughed, but immediately winced and touched his temple gingerly. “Yeah, right, Jade.”

“I did!” I exclaimed, “How is that so hard to believe?”

“Because, you haven’t talked to Hunter in like ever and I doubt he would ever want to talk to you,” he said, while he tried lifting himself to his feet, but failed.

“Well, I did and we had a really nice talk,” I said, defensively.

Rob laughed again. “Okay, whatever you say, sis. Hey, wanna help a brother up?” He asked after he fell on his ass after trying to use the wall as leverage to slide himself up the wall.

I shook my head and headed to the bathroom. “Nope.”

“Oh, come on! Do it for your little bro!” He called after me.
