Chapter Three
History ended and I was relieved to leave. Mr. Morris got painful boring after a while with his dull, monotone voice. Plus, everything he said came exactly word for word from the text book, so it was like he was reading to everyone instead of teaching. I got up and began shoving my crap in my bag. When I was done, I slung my bag over my shoulder and looked up. I almost screamed when I realized that none only, but Hunter Moriarty was standing in front of me with his hands in his pockets and looking at me sheepishly.
“Hi,” I said, putting my hands in my pockets also.
He squinted and reached up to rub the back of his neck with his right hand. “Hey, so you left your boots at my place yesterday. I have them in my locker, so if you have time before next period, you could come get them,” he explained, looking at me like I was going to slap him across the face and yell at him for stealing my two hundred dollar boots.
“Oh, I didn’t know I forgot them! Wow, yeah, I have study hall next, so I’ll follow you to your locker,” I said. Wow, I was such an idiot, forgetting my shoes in his yard, but yet again, I was happy for an excuse to get to talk to him. Pathetic, right?
“Okay,” he said. We stood there awkwardly for a moment before he swept his hand in front of me and said, “Ladies first.” How chivalrous.
I blushed and started walking towards the door, my heart beating quickly knowing that he was walking right behind me. Once we were both out of Mr. Morris’ classroom, we started walking towards the West hall, side by side. We didn’t talk and I spent almost the entire way, trying to think of something to say to him, but he beat me to it. I was a little shocked at his words. “Did your mom leave right after she told you guys?”
Oh. Yeah, our parents were having an affair. I had totally forgotten while obsessing over him like a complete freak. “Yeah, right away. Why?”
“My dad did too, but he hasn’t been back. I thought maybe he would come back this morning since he works from home, but he didn’t. I stayed up all night waiting, but he didn’t show up. They’re probably together, I guess then,” he said, looking down at the floor. No wonder he looked like he hadn’t slept. It was true.
“Probably. I wouldn’t be surprised if they already had a place together. Maybe an apartment or something.”
“Yeah… I… I just can’t believe it, you know. It’s just so… surreal.”
“I know exactly how you feel. I never thought my parents would divorce; nonetheless, either of them would cheat. I’m so disappointed and hurt.”
“I’m more than that. I’m absolutely furious. I’m so mad at my dad… I could kill him,” Hunter said with a murderous tint in his voice. It was almost… scary hearing him like that. I’d never heard him like that, but again a person can easily change in six years. I definitely had.
“You wouldn’t ever hurt your dad, Hunt,” I said, gripping onto the railing as we climbed the stairs to the third floor.
He looked at me for the first time during our walk and shook his head. “I seriously doubt my self-control around him. Right after he told us, I felt this awful feeling inside of me, almost like there was a bomb set off in my gut and I just exploded. I cracked the kitchen table in half, I was so angry. I don’t even remember doing it, but I did. My mom looks at me like I’m some sort of monster now.”
