Chapter Six
The ride to the Y was silent. Hunter sat next to me, his hand once again pressed reassuringly to my thigh. He was keeping me from having a mental breakdown with that hand. Rob was sitting in the backseat and every few seconds, I’d look at him in the review mirror. He was just sitting, looking out the window. He never moved.
When we got to the Y, I parked in the first spot I saw. I turned the car off and just sat back into my seat. I sucked in a deep breath and looked at Hunter. He was looking at me with sympathy in his eyes. I mouthed a ‘thank you’ and he nodded in understanding. We sat there for another moment, just staring at each other. My eyes ventured down to Hunter’s lips and I ached to close the distance between us and press my lips against them and dig my fingers into his hair. Sadly, Hunter looked away and out the window. “I’m gonna go home. I’ll see you tomorrow, Jade.” He looked back at me with his hand clutching the door handle. He then silently mouthed, “Meet me at twelve at the pool.”
Warmth spread through me and I eagerly nodded. He smiled sadly and then got out of the car. He slammed the door shut and I watched him walk over to his truck.
“What was he doing here?” Asked Rob from the back.
I turned to look at him, my happiness from earlier gone. “I swear to God, Rob, if you speak one more time, I’m going to tell Dad and have you thrown into rehab in the middle of f*cking nowhere,” I warned, my eyes burning into his.
He nodded his head and I turned my body back. “Now stay in here and wait while I get Ginny. I’m locking the car from the outside, so you won’t be able to get out, so don’t even try.” I opened the door and slammed it shut. I made sure to lock it and walked up to the Y entrance. I picked up a giddy and tired Ginny up and we walked hand in hand out of the Y. It was starting to get a little dark out and cold. I made a mental note to wear a jacket to my meeting with Hunter. I was so excited! At least there was some good in the piles and piles of bad that was my life.
“Is Rob home?” Asked Ginny as we approached the car.
“No, he’s in the car waiting for us,” I said, hiding my anger at just the mention of our filthy brother.
“Yay!” Ginny squealed. She ran the last two feet to the car and hopped in the back with Rob after I unlocked it.
I also got into the car and watched through the rearview mirror as Ginny hugged Rob and told him that she’d missed him. Rob hugged her back and lightly ruffled her hair. “I missed you too, kid. Sorry, I wasn’t home last night.”
“Where were you?” Ginny asked, curiously.
Rob’s eyes met mine in the mirror and he sighed. “I was staying with a friend.”
“But it was a school night!” Exclaimed Ginny in horror.
Rob laughed. “That’s why Jade’s so mad at me. You know it’s wrong to have a sleepover on a school night. I’m going to be punished severely for my actions.”
“You have that right,” I piped up.
I made sure everyone was buckled, and then sped home. I was going to have a serious conversation with Rob right after I made dinner which reminded me that I needed to go grocery shopping. The least my mom could have done before she left was stock the house with food. But no. The whore.
