Thomas' face softened when he looked at Aris, and even Newt let out a sad sigh. I just pressed my lips together, looking away. I didn't ever want to talk about the maze. Never again.
"Maybe you should sit down," Thomas said. "I think we have a lot to talk about."
Aris snorted, raising his eyebrows. "You seem to forget that I've already had this discussion with Emma. You guys had a Maze, Grievers, Wicked. I know."
Thomas seemed surprised for a second but relaxed, giving Aris a small nod.
"Who's that guy?" A voice asked. I turned to see Minho standing in the doorway, a pack of Glader's behind him. They looked terrified, but then again, I was still shaken up from what was out there.
"Minho, meet Aris," Thomas said, taking a step to the side and gesturing toward the other boy. "Aris, meet Minho."
Minho muttered something unintelligible and Ben walked into the room, his eyes widening when he saw Aris. For a second, I thought he recognized him, but then...
"Since when did Teresa turn into a dude?"
Newt rolled his eyes, letting out a sigh. "Look," He said. "Let's take down these top beds and move them around the room. Then we can all sit and figure out what's bloody going on."
Thomas shook his head. "No. First, we need to go find Teresa. She must be in some other room."
"Isn't one." Minho shrugged.
"What do you mean?"
"I just checked this whole place out. There's the big common area, this room, our dorm room, and some seriously shucked doors that lead outside—where we came in from the bus yesterday. Locked and chained from the inside. Doesn't make any sense, but I don't see any other doors or exits."
Thomas shook his head, not understanding. "But ... what about last night? Where'd the food come from? Didn't anyone notice other rooms, a kitchen, anything?"
He looked around, hoping someone would answer him. No one did.
Maybe there's a hidden door," Newt finally said. "Look, we can only do one thing at a time. We need to—"
"No!" Thomas shouted. "We've got all day to talk to this Aris guy. The label by the door said Teresa should be here somewhere—we need to find her!"
Thomas began walking to the door, but I put my hand out and grabbed the back of his shirt, making him stop. "Thomas! Can you just stop, for one second?"
"No, Emma! You stop! How can you be acting so happy? Your friends have died, and there's dead people hanging outside of this room, yet you're jumping around and laughing. Chuck is dead. He died because of you, and you already forgot about him!" I stumbled back, and sucked in a breath, my heart feeling like it had just been ripped out. "How could you be so selfish?"
I sunk to the ground, falling onto my knees. He was right. Oh my god, he was right. As soon as I saw Aris, I forgot about everyone. Teresa, Gally...Chuck. God, I forgot about Chuck. He died. Chuck died saving me, and I forgot about it. I don't deserve to be laughing. I don't deserve to be smiling. I don't deserve to be here. I deserve to be dead. I should be dead. Gally should have killed me, not Chuck.
"I—I can't—I'm sorry—" I sobbed, heaving as I tried to suck in a breath. I couldn't breathe.
"Thomas, what the shuck did you say that for?" Minho growled, grabbing Thomas by the collar of his shirt. I stared at them dazedly, swaying slightly as I stumbled back up, leaning on a random kid for support. I didn't even know his name. I'm a horrible human being.
"Emma, where are you going?" Aris called out to me, as I staggered towards the doorway. I ignored him and continued to walk into the common room. I ignored everyone. I ignored everything. I even ignored the bodies, or at least tried too. I just needed to get out. I needed to get out.
So weak.
My head snapped up and I stalked towards the door, my jaw clenched.
Shut up. I growled in my head, hot tears still streaming down my face. It wasn't Gally. It wasn't Aris. It was Wicked. The people from Wicked. I couldn't deal for them now. Not now.
We thought you were stronger than this.
Well I'm not! I'm not strong! I reached the door, shaking it wildly, despite the fact the it was bolted shut with chains.
You are.
I'm not, just shut up!
We can make you strong, Emma. Isn't that what you want?
I growled, slamming my fist into the door. "I don't want anything from you! Just leave me the fuck alone!"
"Emma, what are you doing?" Someone shouted, the sound of multiple footsteps coming towards me.
We don't care what you want, Emma. We can just take what we want.
I screamed, drawing my fist back again. "You can't control me! I won't be controlled anymore! You did this to me!"
Before my fist could hit the metal of the door once again, someone grabbed my wrist. I clenched my jaw, and out of reflex, flung around, connecting my other fist with something hard. Newt groaned loudly, bringing his hands up to hold his nose. Time seemed to go in slow motion after that. My eyes widened and Aris pulled me back, wrapping his arms around my waist. I thrashed about in his grasp, screaming, telling him to let me go. Minho ran over to Newt, checking to see if he was okay, although he himself had a bleeding nose. Noticing that, I turned to Thomas, who wasn't watching me, but instead checking all of the faces of the hanging bodies. He had a busted lip and a bleeding nose.
We don't have to control you for you to hurt your friends Emma.
"Shut up! Shut up!" I screamed, pulling out of Aris' grip. "If you don't' shut up, I'll—I'll—"
You'll what, Emma? What will you do?
"I'll kill you!" I screeched, reaching up to my hair and pulling it hard. "Fuck you for doing this to me!"
"Emma, calm down." Ben said, approaching me with his arm's in the air. I turned to him, an angry sob coming out of my mouth.
"Don't tell me to calm down! They're messing with my head! I need to get rid of them! I need—"
"Dave, what are you doing? Don't—"
With a sharp pain flashing through my head, I fell to the ground, the darkness consuming me.
